It was obvious from the complete lack of urgency in the last two and half minutes that the players had no idea that they needed to win in regulation.

Either the coaches are morons or they were not aware of the tie-breaking procedure(still morons).

As entertaining as Team NA is, I still can't stand the idea of all-star teams in national tournaments. I'd much rather see Russia in the semifinals. Then again, I'd like Finland to beat Russia. :scared:

So let's see if this is correct now, if NA had pulled their goalie at the end, they could have either:

#1: Guaranteed advancing to semis, now they rely on Finland(nothing to fight for) to win vs Russia.

#2: failing to score but no empty net goal scored against -> same as now

#3: lost by 1 goal, ending up being at 2 points. In this case, the goal differential is such that they would advance if Russia loses vs Finland in regulation.

Hence, I guess the only way this would backfire is if Finland defeated Russia during OT. So shouldn't they have done it, then? Guarantee is a guarantee. It's curious if the coaching staff didn't know this.

But, but, but what about the speeeeed. Team NA would destroy Sweden after two early goals. Such an easy group. We did what we had two and not an inch more. GG.

I don't think the refs could have done more to help out Sweden.

MacKinnon didn't know he needed a regulation win, but what would the difference really be? Either way it would have been better for them to win in regulation since they have the tie breaker with Sweden but not Russia, and they still had to play careful or else risk losing in regulation and getting eliminated immediately. NA was still extremely aggressive in the third period, and Lundqvist was brilliant. Sweden were holding back and playing super careful.

I just LOVE the fact that U-23/Russia gets to face Canada (unless they throw the game against Europe tonight).:)

head to head win over North America

Yeah true enough, damn. That's tough because NA should have won that game. I could easily see Finland beat them though, Russia really isn't much better of a team (individuals yeah, but not as a team). I hope NA advances so badly.

There is no 3-way tie possible. Sweden got 5 points and won the group.

are you even following? They're discussing if NA had won in regulation. Sweden would have had 4 points and there would have been a 3 way tie with NA having h2h over Sweden(if 2 way tie) and GD over Sweden(if 3 way tie)

I get that a bunch of HFB posters (me included) didn't know all the possibilities to advance when the game was tied late in the 3rd, but if the NA staff didn't know and/or didn't tell their team, that's inexcusable.
