Because Thornton caused the entire thing? If he doesn't want a stick in his face, he shouldn't trip someone from behind illegally.
In THIS case, I agree with you. All I'm saying is that the rules are there to protect the players because you know, somebody somewhere... will take advantage of getting tripped and smacking someone on the face.

Except for the fact you're leaving out the fact Thortnon tripped him which was the cause of the high stick. If you fall on your own and clip someone in the fact obviously it's a penalty but you know this wasn't the case.
