My thoughts on various players:
- Lindholm looked fine to me. He pursues the puck aggressively, makes smart plays away from the puck, and goes to the boards with vigor. I wouldn't mind seeing him stay here in a role similar to Nash's.
- Gerbe outskated the hell out of some guys. At one point he knocked a Jacket completely off the puck, which is impressive considering he gave up half a foot to that guy. I think he'll make this team with that effort level.
- Bowman looks more like a 4th liner every time I see him. He has a lot of tools, but at the end of the day he makes little to no impact on the game.
- Dalpe was totally invisible. He better bring it big-time in the next couple of games or he could be done here in a hurry.
- I felt for Terry, who had a good game but killed one of our PPs with a turnover and penalty. He skated quite a bit on the PK, so maybe that's a niche he's working on.
- Murphy is a phenomenal offensive talent. He has his downside, in terms of turnovers and getting overpowered by larger players, but he really does have that Coffey-like ceiling that we heard about when we drafted him. At the very least he is ready to be a PP specialist.
- Ward was decent but not good enough. He didn't get a lot of shots early, other than wide-open one timers on the backside post, and then got a lot more rubber as the game went on. Not quite the ideal for a guy who's playing his first game in over 6 months. But he has to be better than he was tonight.
- Gleason and Komisarek were not adequate. They skated together and got pinned down frequently. Komisarek especially has to be smarter.
- Westgarth is a total waste of space. Bush league garbage player who doesn't fill the narrow role in which he has a small amount of value. I begrudge him his 5 minutes more than I ever begrudged Chad his first-line minutes. It's infuriating that we will likely waive someone in order to protect this guy's gifted roster spot.
Overall not a terrible game, very preseason-ish. Muller didn't sound impressed with Sutter and made some vague references to intensity level (I think that they were pointed at Komi and Gleason) so we will hopefully see an edgier team next time out.
