You need a mix. You need to diversify your funds. If you're doing all high-ceiling, boom-or-bust types, you're going to both bust too often and have the wrong mix of play styles. But really, this isn't a binary thing, it's not one (high floor/low ceiling) or the other (low floor/high ceiling). These guys, and their mix of floors and ceilings, are on a spectrum.

So we just need to surround him with a Kane, Keith, Sharp, and Hossa?

I like Larkin and in my perfect world he'd be our 2C behind a truly elite #1.
Lol.

Yes, but unironically. For a good player to succeed in the playoffs you need to surround him with other good players.

My guess Red Wings trying to get bigger and be hard to play against. I expect the same on the second draft day.
My opinion is just that... an opinon. lol. I believe in Yzerman. Just, gosh dang it. I watched Savoie a lot and feel he'll be a good scorer in this league.

I know nothing. NOTHING of Kasper. so. yeah Idk I don't like it but what the heck does my opinoin matter when i know nothing about one guy and have some biased towards another? lol. Time will tell. I hope he's a great player.

My takeaways from the discussion:

We got one of the younger draft eligible players showing great success in a hard league before the rest of the scouts got firmer hype on him.
I am hearing Hockey IQ and Compete as the greatest strengths and I am good with that
There is some subtle signs that Kasper was higher on the wings board and they were surprised we got him at 8
I think Yzerman's track record has earned some freedom from the skepticism
I think too many people are overreacting to this pick, just wait and see
He seems like a guaranteed roster player, we just don't know at which level
The way the lottery worked for us we have no choice but to build a defense first team, Kasper sounds like the perfect pick
This core is shaping up to be pretty amazing actually

Yeah, I don’t know how anyone can watch the oilers and come to any other conclusion.

Are people just looking at stats and say he's not a good scorer? Do they take in consideration the level of the league they play in and how much ice time they get?

How I see this draft:

Kasper wins the faceoff --> puck to Buchelnikov, he SHOOTS --> Dylan James makes a screen and whacks the rebound in.

For sure. If this is our center depth chart in 2 years, we're bringing home several cups

23 1st
Larkin
Kasper
Veleno/Rasmussen

And that's not a knock on any of our guys. We could definitely compete if every one of them slotted in a line higher. I'm just saying that 23 could have multiple franchise centers and we look like another bottom 10 team next year.

I like Kasper and I support the pick for sure.

Plenty of credible sources question exactly how much offense there is. You’re not getting perfect players at #8 overall. I don’t think it’s a hater take to simply not know exactly how much offense Kasper is going to bring to the table.

There are pros and cons to every pick. With Kasper, I think it’s legitimate to wonder whether he brings enough production to elevate our top six. If he doesn’t I’m not going to lose my mind over it, but I think it’s possible to endorse a pick and still have some reservations about it.

I do think he has some hidden upside though. His skating is really good. His playmaking isn't really there but he's a good technical passer and good at making the right play consistently, just not the real creative plays. I think the upside comes from his shot. He's one of the few players that rips clap bombs on the rush.

I don't think his production is that far away from Raymond.

I think so too. I did have a top 10 grade on Kasper, I had a couple other guys narrowly ahead but he's definitely a guy I've been supportive of us drafting throughout the year.

I think there are flashes of a guy who can chip in 50-60+ points, that wouldn't shock me. But I think people are maybe slightly downplaying the odds that he doesn't get there. In other words I think he can be a 2C, but I'm not ready to pencil him in there at this stage.

That's reasonable. I think even as a 3c though he'll be a useful player and we won't really regret it. His offensive upside can be questioned but his two way ability and physicality is almost a sure thing.

I don't have any issue with this pick, just one I'm not too excited about.

I don't think he has as much upside as some of the other players I liked, but I also think he could just as well blow the doors off of whatever people think his ceiling is. You really shouldn't bet against the players who compete like he does and are smart. Makes a lot of sense for us from a fit perspective. Potential 2C, and a guy who has a lot of versatility and does things we could really use in our top 6/9. Puck retrievals, defensive support, zone exits/entries, consistently makes the smart play. These are really valuable things he does really well.

You're right, but I think that's lacking some context. Raymond was battling mono during his draft year. He had exhibited really high-end playmaking in the U20s and international play.

I think there's always a high upside with versatile, competitive players like Kasper. But I also think people slightly underestimate how tough it is to produce top six offense in the NHL. In some ways I'm being kind of protective of Kasper here, like maybe he comes out of the gate like a Seider/Raymond/Larkin and looks incredible in his D+1 or D+2. But if he's more of a slow burn like Veleno or Rasmussen I hope people don't get their pitchforks out. That's not an outrageous outcome here.

Same here. I’ve maybe been to seemingly harsh on it.

Not a sexy pick. I like me some flair. But obviously there’s something there i’m not seeing.

All aboard the kasper train baby

I think itll be interesting to see where he plays next year. Sounds like Rogle really likes him, but he'll definitely be at the wings camp which means hes missing the start of the season over there I would think.

Yzerman thinks theres a chance he plays this year or next. I wouldnt be surprised if hes in Rogle this year at all (theyve been good for Detroit prospects), but I also wouldnt be surprised if hes in Detroit camp and goes from there. Griffins first line center with some call ups potentially

He's for sure not the player you think of when you think 8th overall, but he brings 8th overall value imo, just not in a typical way. I think that's a good way to put it.

Chris Abbott is at the draft to discuss future plans with Marco and Detroit. I would imagine Marco plays in the prospect camp and in Traverse City but goes back to Rogle. I want to see him get at least 2nd line minutes next year in Rogle with Niederbach on his wing.

I'm sure Abbot wants Kasper and is gonna plead his case, but Yzerman will just tell him to f*** his hat if he doesnt want him there lol.

I do think he'll just do all the camps in Detroit then head back to Rogle later in their season but its not a guarantee
