Interesting, just something you don't really hear of during hurricanes ironically. The storm surge and winds get all the attention

Yeah, I feel like most times you just chalk it up to "the hurricane", even if you do see something. I don't know the scientific reasons, but I believe I remember reading something about landfall and surface friction playing a part. The winds get used to basically have free reign, and then they hit land which doesn't move like water, and it causes spinups, essentially.

That makes total sense! And I didn't even think of "just chalking it up". How much of the wind damage is tornados blending in among the rest of the 100mph winds ya know? Definitely on to something there. TIL

@Starat327 pretty much nailed it.

The atmosphere in this area was so juiced up, and the center of circulation pushed further north than expected, pretty much right over Philadelphia, which caused all the tornadoes today.

This is definitely a historic day for this area. The footage coming out now is unreal, it's going to be something to see tomorrow

This is such a wild phenomenon. Like, hurricanes are just like "I'm gonna damage everything in my path".

Tornadoes are like " I'm gonna completely f*** you, and you, ignore you, you're cool. Royally f*** your neighbor, and the person two doors down, but the one in between is fine."

That's outrageous. It looks like tornado aftermath you'd see in middle America.
Yeah, something you'd expect in Oklahoma or something, not southern NJ...

Also, usually, tornadoes that occur with land falling hurricanes aren't very strong and don't last very long, which is probably why you don't hear about them that often. They are never this devastating or this long tracked.

A good friend of mine house is like two houses away from some of the devastation tonight. Completely crazy. Scary as f

It's wild to me, man. Like, for the longest time I was like "there's no way rain just 'ends'". But sure, I get it it has to end at some point.

Tornadoes are just wild. Everytime I see one, I just think of like... surprise! buttsex memes. Pop up with no real notice, f*** shit up, then they're gone.

Hope your buddy is OK.

I remember back in college, a friend of mine was driving home for a long weekend and watched one form as she was crossing the Bay Bridge. If there was ever a "Jesus take the wheel" moment, that would have been it.

I'll let our resident meteorologists speak to this but I believe it's fairly common out the outskirts of hurricanes as they make landfall. Something to do with there being little resistance over water and then Heavily increased ground friction as it moves over land, I believe?
Yup! MA had a total of 4 between the remnants of Fred and Henri.

The heavy stuff is starting to move in here in the Boston metro area. I think the tornado threat is down towards Cape Cod and the Islands. Right now we have a flash flood watch and a wind advisory in place.

Hope everyone is ok!
