At least it puts to rest the accusations by members of certain fan base that the NHL are stealing goals and assists from their star player, which Crosby would have got to keep.

I was a bit surprised they changed it as its not exactly conclusive from the camera angles, but most likely they got it right. They do obviously put a lot of effort into this.

At 1,400 points, Crosby is two behind Alex Ovechkin for 21st in league history. Only Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky and Steve Yzerman reached 1,400 points with one franchise.

Plus Gordie Howe (1,809 pts with Detroit), Joe Sakic (1,641 with Colorado - including Quebec, it's two cities but one franchise), Ray Bourque (1,506 with Boston) and Stan Mikita (1,467 with Chicago).

Just curious, what would it take for Crosby to surpass Lemieux as the greatest Penguin player?

Obviously not comparing him to Mario’s role as an owner and franchise savior, that’s a different thing. And not suggesting he’s a “better player”. But in terms of achievements as a Penguin player, what’s the boundary?

- He’s 320 points behind Mario for the franchise record, which certainly seems doable.
- He will almost certainly take the record for assists, though goals might be a challenge (he would need 175 more).
- Already has a large lead for franchise GP.
- Already building on his lead as the team’s longest tenured captain.
- Crosby leads Mario in Cups (3-2) and is tied in Conn Smythes (2-2).
- Mario still has the advantage in Harts (3-2), Rosses (6-2), goalscoring/Richards (3-2). Mario has one more season as a 1st All Star center.

If Crosby wins another Cup with a Conn Smythe attached, does that push him over the top? Or is this more about having another Hart season? Or is it about compiling the career totals? All of the above? Or is it just impossible for him to compete with Mario’s aura?

Not sure that can ever happen due to the mythical status of Mario (no sarcasm). However, I think another Cup +Smythe would get the debates rolling. Sid takes care of himself and I could see him playing until 40, but injuries are always a concern. It really depends how much more hardware he collects.

I don't think MVP's matter nearly as much as Conn Smythe's because that means your team likely won the Cup. Different sport but I think Peyton Manning has 2 more MVP's than Tom Brady, but no one really cares and not many even know that? Playoff success is what resonates so I think Sid would need to have some more sustained playoff success.

Sid is the better “performer” for PIT. Mario will never be below Sid tho from a legacy stance.

I think it really depends on how far the Pens can go in the playoffs and how long Crosby keeps up his elite level of play like this year and if people can look past the video game numbers and pure offense.

But maybe injuries make it impossible for some people as it would come down to Crosby doing these things and then some people with an overall perspective maybe ranking him higher.
