I'm curious to see how Pouliot responds in an expanded offensive role.

It's going to be a nightmare... minus-city.

Pouliot looks like he's really struggled with defensive positioning over the past few games (both before he went down and coming back up).

There are factors working against him: Lovejoy isn't playing particularly well; the Pens have been down a forward or defenseman or both; the Pens transition to a slightly different dzone coverage hasn't been smooth.

I am hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

EDIT:

With stats, since March 3, at 5v5, Pouliot has the most scoring chances against per 60 (SCA60), second worst SCF% (behind Scuderi), the second worst corsi against per 60 (CA60, behind Letang who is less sheltered), the second worst CF% (behind Scuderi), and although the sample size is small (8 games for Pouliot), he's been on the ice for the highest goals against (3.31 goals against per 60).

I think Pouliot is a very talented player, but I am not sure he is ready to be playing the type of minutes that the Penguins are playing him already not even considering the increased minutes and less sheltered minutes that he is going to get. Hopefully it is a good experience and doesn't damage his development.

Just get to the playoffs. Then everyone and their mother can be on the team.

He's got the ability to be the go to guy for offense from the back end. I'm curious to see how he handles his minutes being less sheltered defensively.

I'm already pretty sure how that'll look, haha.

Hopefully they can get him to the middle on the PP.

That would be the best place for him. But you know how we work. We'll probably cycle through every possible configuration twice before we get to the painfully obvious one.

That's why he wasn't my first choice for call-ups this year in spite of his skill. Kid has ice water in his veins, and while that can be a great asset, he also often thinks he has more time/space than he actually does and gets burned because of it.

But Pouliot's too talented to have something like this hinder his development IMO.

Are we saying that even when management wants to actually play the young guns that were not even allowed to?

No, I am saying that player development is more complicated than sink or swim playing time in the NHL.

Anybody claiming that playing time = development is kidding themselves. It's one piece of the puzzle.

But I have been critical of the Pens "development" of Pouliot for the past few months.

I know most of HFBoards hates the Penguins but I genuinely feel bad for you guys...Every year you guys lose one or two of your core players right around playoff time and it screws up your whole year and the whole trade Malkin for depth craziness starts all over again on the trade boards. I hope you guys do well in the playoffs even if Letang doesn't make it back in time.

I see Letang's injury as something the penguins needed, of course i dont ever wanna see one of the penguins players hurt but this is something that could bring the team together. This is where i could see the penguins coming together and just take off at the right time of the year. Forget the past, stop complaining. We are deeper this year then we are last year, and crosby is finally getting his game back together, and malkin can win games by himself. Glass half full approach guys :handclap:

We'd be relying on 3 rookie D men (if Ehrhoff is out) and carrying Scuderi. If it was the start of the regular season and they had time to get some games into them, it might not be the worst thing. The playoffs are in less than 3 weeks though.

I'm convinced that they passed the "come together and get inspired by injury" window awhile ago, at best they're desensitized to it and at worst it freaks them out. It's so common for them to have these things happen.

It was really thoughtful of the Pittsburgh Penguins to start the game at 6:30 so all the Walking Dead fans can watch the 90 minute season finale at 9
