If Edmonton, Winnipeg, Dallas, Carolina or Toronto win the Cup, that will be the 7th unique champion in the last eight years (one time winner within any reasonable period of time encompassing the participating players time on the team).

2017-18: Washington
2018-19: St. Louis
2019-20: Tampa Bay
2020-21: Tampa Bay
2021-22: Colorado
2022-23: Las Vegas
2023-24: Florida
2024-25: TBD

Do you like this nhl where a new champion comes about each year?

I like parity, in general. And I'm glad there's new winners (nearly) every year. It's less fun to follow a sport for a year when only 3 or 4 teams have a chance.

I'm certainly hoping for a new champ this season, too. But this seems a bit early when WSH and FLA are both still in it.

Same teams are still making final 4/finals for most part. Even if you frame it being a crapshoot like there's new winner every year, it's among the same elite teams.

I would say less so a “crap shoot” as a lot of parity towards the top and a lot of structural factors that make dynasties/semi-dynasties increasingly unlikely even compared to 15 years ago.

Same in the nba (assuming Boston do not pull it of, which would be very unlikely despite winning tonight right now)

Warrior
Raptor
Lakers
Bucks
Warriors
Nuggets
Celtics
New one probably

MLB

Giants
Royals
Cubs
Astros
Red Sox
nationals
Dodgers
Braves
Astros
Rangers
Dodgers

9 in the last 11 years

When it is not your team having a shot, dynasty run or say the wings-stars-avs-devils dance, is arguably more engaging, you know everyone on the teams you get to see play very well and the storyline. Hawks run, Pens vs Red Wings back to back, also nice. You develop a root for or against them when there is a dynasty that make it engaging.

This was pretty much the concern from many with the introduction of the salary cap

There will be no dynasties and pretty much the cup is a revolving door where most teams will take a turn at winning the cup

Which renders the entire experience useless

Tank, collect picks, aim for a cup, hit!
Tank, collect picks, aim for a cup, miss!

Tank, collect picks, aim for a cup, hit!

For example, right now... some Ducklings and Guppies are rejoicing because they've done their fair share of Tank, collect picks, aim for a cup, miss!
so now it's time for Tank, collect picks, aim for a cup, hit!

Meanwhile it's the Queefs turn to Tank, collect picks, aim for a cup, miss! and now the Ducklings and (soon the Guppies) will gang up on the Queefs. Until...

The Queefs go back to Tank, collect picks, aim for a cup, hit! and the lil ducklings and lil guppies will go through another set of Tank, collect picks, aim for a cup, miss!

and so on and so on...

So exciting!

Wake me up in 2040 when it's our turn to HIT again

How do you come up with this when Florida can still easily win again??

Kings already won so I would be quiet. Some teams like Sabres, Canucks, wild have never won even one throughout their history

i wasn't talking about specifics, but overall that's how it works

Ask Pittsburgh
Ask Chicago
Ask the seasonal Sharts
Ask the McDrais

you tank, get your stars, aim for the cup, if it doesn't work, tank tank again

doesn't matter if LA benefited off of the cap era, i'm not biased, the cap era sucks

Tell that to Sabres fans.

With 32 teams and the league continuing to expand, it will only get harder to win.

Agreed and it's gonna suck even more

Just like how they're watering down the FIFA World Cup by expanding to 48 teams lol , so now nations will take turns to "make it to the WC" hurray for equity!

Eh, at least in the case of the World Cup, it being an obvious money grab aside to expand the tournament from 32 to 48 aside, everyone (except the host or hosts) still has to qualify. Every FIFA member is eligible to enter unless not currently suspended/banned, and it's pretty rare for a country to just not bother entering at all.

Only way it would get harder to qualify is if/when new nations are created, and since there are around 200 FIFA members, it only makes a small difference when it happens.

Sure but for example, if we take South America, we went from 4.5 to 6.5 slots

You have your usual elite 4 (Argentina/Brazil/Uruguay/Colombia)

then you have your rolodex of teams that'll take turns to qualify (Peru my turn! Paraguay my turn! Venezuala my turn! Bolivia my turn!) how will it NOT be that?

So this is the similar issue i'm talking about in the NHL, when you force a cap, are you not creating a scenario where there's a rolodex of teams taking turns at the cup? Sure looks that way to me

And if that is the case, alot of merit is taken out of the equation and instead is replaced with MOMENTUMMMM ouuuuu

anyway, we won't agree, but i think the cap STINKSSS

I mean, I don't necessarily agree with you about the cap sucking, yeah. That's fair. Your reasons for not liking it are perfectly valid, and it's not my place to try to talk you out of them. :)

I was just kind of trying to make a side point about the soccer World Cup in particular, I guess.
