If Edmonton, Winnipeg, Dallas, Carolina or Toronto win the Cup, that will be the 7th unique champion in the last eight years (one time winner within any reasonable period of time encompassing the participating players time on the team).

2017-18: Washington
2018-19: St. Louis
2019-20: Tampa Bay
2020-21: Tampa Bay
2021-22: Colorado
2022-23: Las Vegas
2023-24: Florida
2024-25: TBD

Do you like this nhl where a new champion comes about each year?

I like parity, in general. And I'm glad there's new winners (nearly) every year. It's less fun to follow a sport for a year when only 3 or 4 teams have a chance.

I'm certainly hoping for a new champ this season, too. But this seems a bit early when WSH and FLA are both still in it.

Same teams are still making final 4/finals for most part. Even if you frame it being a crapshoot like there's new winner every year, it's among the same elite teams.

I would say less so a “crap shoot” as a lot of parity towards the top and a lot of structural factors that make dynasties/semi-dynasties increasingly unlikely even compared to 15 years ago.

Dynasties are fun, but in a 32 team league it really wouldn’t be healthy to have 2 or 3 teams racking up a decade’s worth of titles while 29 or 30 fanbases feel like they’re wasting their lives rooting for something that will never happen.
