This is a very optimistic view. Cholo doesn't look like he has the tools to be a top pairing D guy. And Seider has never played on North American ice, form a league that has never been known to produce elite talent (Seidenberg, and Ehrhoff are the only two major players to come out of that league). The chances that they both hit as top guys is near 0. Though I am much more hopeful Seider will become a #2 defensive d-man than I am that Cholo becomes more than a #4 PMD.

Uwe Krupp was awful for us, but otherwise pretty good in the NHL. And not a million miles away in terms of profile.

But you gotta start somewhere, again people are not acknowledging how much trading and signing to maintain mediocrity cost this organization. Yzerman is starting with a handful or prospects and developing players and that is it. Holland only stopped trading picks for rentals like 2-3 seasons ago. Rock bottom was really what last season?

Completely disagree. From a prospects/draft picks/young core/cap flexibility standpoint, Yzerman has inheireted an extremely advantageous situation. The wings bottomed out and initiated a rebuild long ago.

yeah man 300th best player in the league at best

**** off you know that isn't what I meant

Then what did you mean? He put 73 pts on a train wreck offensively and defensively team, while playing well defensively against the other teams top players every night.

which just isn't good enough out of your best forward if you're also going for a committee approach on defense

41 players put up more than 73 points this year

The only "next #1s" I remember were

Jiri Fischer before his heart betrayed him.
Jakub Kindl before we realized he played like a kitten.
Brendan Smith before we realized he dumb.
Ryan Sproul before we realized that he didn't know what defense was.

Not sure any of those were projected as number 1's....but your descriptions are accurate. Like XO til we realised that, no, his skating was never going to improve.

Did all of those 41 players do it with our offense? Larkin wasn't exactly playing with a great offense. 73 pts on a bottom team is pretty good, and if we have a solid blueline, he will be more than good enough. How many of those players were even on a bottom 5-10 team? My guess is not many.

Exactly. There's every chance we will have another 2-3 years of hoping for luck in the lottery, as our young d core starts to replace our old d core and guys like Nielsen, Abby & Helm wind down. Lets face it, the draft to get lucky in is 2020!

We basically have all the money in the world. Whatever our top 6 or top 4 is lacking in 3 years we'll be able to go get.

But you guys are really missing the boat on what the implications of having so many more prospects off the ground than usual/average are.

The odds that there is a viable outlier in our prospect pool is getting very high. That's the only way you get the type of player you guys are alluding to(not freaking trouba or Subban), outside the top 2 picks in the draft or ufa.

I've never seen Seider play and couldn't find any 'shift-by-shift' videos, so I had a look at the Germany vs Slovakia game from the Worlds and compiled his shifts into a vid for whoever is interested... It immediately got blocked on youtube, so streamable will have to do.

(#21, White)

Thank you!

I think Yzerman will go hard after free agents next offseason

Yeah I agree, Larkin is brutal!

That is not at all what he is saying. Why do people even bother posting shit like this?

Larkin is very good and I am very thankful to have him, but so far he hasn't shown to be a premier center in the league. All he is saying is that we will need a 1C better than Larkin if we are going to have a defense by committee. We need atleast 1 superstar on this roster. If we won a lotto and had Larkin as our 2C, we would be looking very good. Larkin would be one of the best 2Cs in the league.

That is the best part of drafting Seider with the 6th. Between Hronek, Cholo, McIssac and Seider its enough to finally be optimistic that we may have everything we need for a full D core if 3 of these guys pan out and become #3s and up. We could be 1 lotto pick away (elite center) from having the players we need to be a real contender once our players grow a bit.

You need 2 very good centers and 3 good D. Somewhere within those 5 guys you need atleast 1 superstar. Top 6 wingers and 4th-6th D are easy. We already likely have the wingers we need.

Larkin still has room to improve though i think.

Just like I dont think it's out of the question that we have a no.1 between 17,21 and Seider, I dont think it's out of the question that Veleno and Larkin will be a great spud and silk 1-2 center combo.

I think Larkins development stands a good chance of catching a second wind now that the team is heading in the right direction.

Drafting for need is usually not an ideal concept. But at least Seider is keeping Detroit more flexible for the next draft, which will likely bring another top 10 selection, than getting the projected 2C. I still don't feel confident with Seider at #6, but that is something.

Since someone complained about the DEL and its lack of top talent, we better remind ourselves that Seider mainly played for Mannheim's youth team Jungadler. Leon Draisaitl is also a former Jungadler (means Young Eagle, by the way).

Gruß,
BSHH

The Wings had Seider #6 on their board according to Stevie. I think they went BPA and it happened to be Seider

That shift by shift against the Czechs is great viewing.

For the most part, Moritz is super composed and his defensive positioning and stick work are stellar, especially considering he is an 18 year old playing against men.

Also handled himself quite well physically against them, which was impressive to see. His elite skating also helps him get out of difficult situations and get to the spots he needs to be to make a crucial defensive play.

I see no reason why he won't be able to eat heavy minutes and defend against top lines in the NHL in as little as 3 years.

Can't make any assessments on his offensive game, but he does have decent vision coming out of the zone.

His standout traits though are definitely his skating and hockey IQ, particularly defensively. Guy is going to be f***ing difficult to get past for a long time.

Remember all the talk after the Zadina pick about how you should start off your rebuild with defense? This pick should really please that crowd. In two years we'll ideally have Cholowski and Hronek with 2.5 seasons of experience, Seider with 1, McIsaac maybe with 1 or being a rookie, and then any depth young guys that manage to make the team. Hopefully in those two seasons we get lucky in the lottery, get Lafreniere/Byfield/Raymond or whoever the top guys in 2021 are then add a top 4 defenseman in their prime to round out the young d-corp then suddenly your looking at the end of the rebuild.
