Well I have not seen North Dakota play this year..Last year and at the World Juniors I was not impressed at all by Schmaltz who was often lazy and one-way and did not hustle..He also had a skewed assists to goals ratio on offense with no proof one the scouting report of a terrific shot...This year the assists to goals ratio looks ecen more skewed to the paucity of goals side..So is he just a playmaker type who cannot finish much? IT IS POSSIBLE as Stan Bowman indicated in a podcast recently that Schmaltz has concentrated this year on improving his defensive responsibilities..Going from rookie freshman to veteran sophomore you do expect improvement in certain areas and so I hope this is true because he has to be a 2 'way player to be in the nhl ..Whatever there is no doubt he and Senior Drake Caggiula have a dynamic together as a duo on a line with Schmaltz setting him up and Caggiula finishing with goals into the net...Caggiula is not big at 5'10 but a solid 185 and I liked what I saw of him last year..He will be a top college Ufa target this summer but I wonder if his success with Schmaltz could land Caggiula with us if Stan targets him and woos him with the chance to play immediately next season in Chicago with Schmaltz? THIS could only be a possibility IF Stan and our brass determine that Schmaltz has improved enough to leave school after his soph year (as did Toews from UND) and that may depend on whether we sign Caggiula ...Of their chemistry together can be duplicated in the NHL then maybe we get back to being an elite and deeper team next year..

I think I 100% agree with this. Nice post.

Was at the Hogs game yesterday. Missed the first period but what I caught:

They're training them to be Blackhaws for sure - absolutely atrocious PP. Spent more time in their own end than attacking

Pokka had a real strong game. He looked real good in his own end too. Twice on the PP he got left hanging by his partner (cant remember who it was on the PP) and Pokka made diving plays to break up odd man rushes.

Other noticeable defense were Goose and actually Cameron Schilling. He seems pretty solid. All in all RFD's back end still seems rather strong even with all the trades we made last season.

Bickell looks like he's putting forth more of an effort than i've seen in the NHL. He looks like he's skating harder. Nothing to show for his efforts. Diddnt do anything noticeable besides a couple hits.

Leighton played real well. Made 2-3 big cross crease saves. He's definitely a solid depth goalie to have if someone goes down

Thought Hartman had a good game as well.

I was looking at the Ice Hogs box score tonight and noticed McNeill wasn't in the lineup. Looks like he has missed the last three games, injured?

There was no mention anywhere. Hasn't played since the Nov 18. loss to G.R.

JMo Scored, Bickell Scored, Pokka scored.
Bickell was the first star of the game, but Im not really sure how. Other than his goal, he didn't do anything.
Pokka looked good. Svedberg looked good. Hino had the puck on his stick all night but unfortunately couldnt make anything of it.
LOTS of fights, but it was Hogs vs Wolves so that is to be expected.
SVEDBERG got into a fight and leveled the dude. That was awesome to watch. He was feisty tonight.
Pokka played the best I have seen of him so far.
Im wondering is Rasmussen will get a shot with the Hawks, he is pretty consistent every time I catch a game and kills penalties.
Leighton was solid again but no one really cares about him.

Rasmussen has taken huge strides forward this year. He's been given more minutes and now has some PP minutes under his belt. He has always been a good PKer but one area of concern is his continuing lack of skills at the dot. If Rasmussen can clean up around the edges, he certainly could take the next step. With Kero not necissisarily performing to his strengths, it's not unrealistic to see #12 get the next cup of coffee.

He seems to be a popular guy in Rockford. With coaching and the fans.
Would like to see him get a shot sometime soon. He has looked like he could be a solid 4th liner AT LEAST at the NHL.

The two most impressive prospects at any level right now are Schmaltz and Forsling. Forsling is tracking like a big time defenseman. He is 3rd in SHL scoring for U20 players and he's a D.

Schmaltz picked up 2 primary A last night on 2 Caggiula goals.

Right behind these 2 is Pokka who is putting together a really great season of his own. Basically the top prospects are dominating the way they should.

Now, if you want to be a pessimist I will say that neither Schmaltz nor Forsling play anything close to a Q style so it's something to monitor but nothing to get worked up about at this point.

Another primary sick assist by Schmaltz. I've come around on him. 14 points in last 6 games and a period

EVERYONE slept on schmaltz because he had a rough year playing third line minutes on a stacked UND team. He has so much talent. Now the CBS line with the Sioux is flying and boy I hope the Hawks sign him and Caggiula this offseason. **** sign Stecher too.

No. Not everyone. Far from it, actually. The only truly vocal Schmaltz "sleeper" was Fiddy that I can recall.

Danault apparently set to come back to the Icehogs during their upcoming road trip. Fingers crossed that he hasn't missed a step in his recovery. If he returns to form, I fully expect him being a longterm callup.

This is fairly inaccurate because a lot of posters here said give it time because a lot of us knew that UND develops talent pretty well.

Oh yeah like comparing him to pirri. I remember when we drafted him people were upset. Don't act like I'm crazy

Acting like you are crazy? No I am pointing out that your generalization is inaccurate. Schmaltz is nothing like Pirri. People were upset because there were safer picks. Schmaltz was/is a high risk/high reward pick.
