Funny how now Doan is now the talk of "worthless contract" discussion seeing Smith is playing better now.

Anyways, the trade deadline is going to be of no help to us(I hope I'm wrong here). We need our players to get back from the Olympics healthy while the rest of the team gets well rested during the break if we are getting into the playoffs this season.

Make no mistake about it.

Doan and Smith contracts are garbage. They were garbage from day 1 and look even worse today.

Ribeiro contract is beginning to look like garbage too.

That will make 3 for GMDM.

If he does something stupid with Vrbata like give him $4million this offseason. That will be 4.

While I think Doan was playing fine before his illness, he didn't play very well at all during the lockout year and doesn't play physical anymore. Detroit series 1 was his last true physical presence, and he had some of it during our WCF run. So right now he's basically a PP shooting specialist, that we pay 5m+ a year for. I mean, do any of you really think he'll put up more than 40p again?

Doan was paid that contract because he's Doan, not because of his skill set. doans don't win you games, highly talented skilled player wins you games. It's nothing against Doan, but he's a shell of his former self. It was just a matter of time.

That 4.5M he's making could have been a game changer. But I understand you gotta pay your captain. More of a PR move, but it's costing the team, the fans, the people that want to watch their team battle and win.

You could be the nicest guy in the world, but if you can't contribute or earn your money then it's time to find someone that will.

Right, and if this 40p, 5m+ players name was anything besides "Shane Doan" we would all be griping at his contract.

If the fever had no permanent damage, yes. I think he's good for 55-60 maybe even more. His physical play has obviously dropped off but he was on pace for his second best offensive season at age 37.

I don't always agree with AP, but when I do, I prefer it to be when we both tell the "everything sucks" crowd that they're wrong.

This team needs to pull off a Seguin type trade. Get someone worth value that will actually do something for the team.
Hanzal + Samuelsson + Shinnimin + Visintin for Nail Yakupov and Petry.

... and you might need to trade Doan and fire Tippett to make it work, which is what DAL did last March / June.

Seguin trade was unique and the success he's having in DAL is unique. Super-skilled kid in a bad situation and a team desperate to remedy that situation to compete. BOS needed to save a few dollars and fix a large cultural / locker room problem. DAL needed a 1C and had a young core that made Seguin feel at home. Average age of their first line is 21, and the three of them have the keys to the castle, or, rather, the ranch in Texas. Going great for them so far, but that was by no means guaranteed.

Look before you leap, SR.

We need an Olli Jokinen style trade, where we can unload two defensemen for a top line forward.

Everybody thinks Loui Eriksson. Don't forget Reilly Smith.

Smith + (healthy) Eriksson > Ty Seguin

Me too :D
Last year I thought his decrease in production was pretty easily explainable by our **** PP and the short season. This year he bounced back for the most part until getting sick.

That leaves only 2 years left on his deal. Just looked it up since I forgot, but Doan's deal was frontloaded slightly.

12-13 - 6M
13-14 - 5.5M
14-15 - 5M
15-16 - 4.5M

So we save 500k next season and another 500k after that. With general cap inflation and TV money I don't think it's too unmanageable.

What are the rules through the Olympic break? I think Tipp said they can't run practice, but can players at least informally skate?

Smith played well and the PK was good again tonight. These are good signs as was Verby scoring. Doan can use the rest to fully recover. DM will make a move to help the team imho. He will either get a rental like Whitney or trade for a semi fill in guy like Erat. I doubt we get the real top 6 forward we all want at the dead line.

That was a ref not wanting to make a hard call. He wanted to be in the locker room and home as fast as possible... same as the Coyotes.

Doan was excellent before the tick bite. Take the pitch forks and torches another direction.
No, no you're doing it wrong, whomever is currently struggling sucks, their contract sucks and they should be traded because they'll never not suck again. Get with the program rt, this is basic arm chair GM 101 here!

Is there really rules? I think players just take a little time off and go home. I know coaches around the league have said they will take the time to review film, so I'm sure players can at least informally skate.

Tippett: “If the referee makes the right call and gives us a penalty shot the way it should have with 1:38 left, we still have a chance."

I wasn't able to watch the game, but there must be an unofficial rule that the Coyotes do not get given penalty shots. I can think of at least 4 instances in the last 2 years where neither penalties nor penalty shots were given in very clear cut circumstances.

Two were against Ducks in back to back games last year where Chipchura was hauled down in OT on a breakaway and nothing was called.

No doubt in my mind that's a penalty shot if it's not a close score with only a few minutes left to play. The refs don't call it because they don't want to have an impact on the game. Except by not calling they're impacting it just as well.

Love it. If you go to any of the other team's boards you'll see the same thing. You only got a hat trick last game and not five goals, you suck.
