Setting aside the initial ten minutes of the first, that was a solid win by the Jets.
The top 2 D pairings forced a lot of the 'Hawks entries along the boards, and with an F3 as support were utilizing effective outlet passes up the middle upto the far neutral zone, and forcing the Hawks into bad passes or ineffective rushes. Laine, Appleton, Copp and Scheifele were effective as D support throught the N zone allowing the Jets to control both their own blueline and the N zone. It was a really good adjustment.
I thought the 1st and 2nd pairing played exceptionally well, and Kulikov had one of his best outings all season. Both pairings were especially effective in not allowing the Hawks forwards to congregate in front of Hellebuyck, and forcing them back to the perimeters of the bottom half of the zone, because the strategy worked in not allowing a lot of 2nd and 3rd scoring chances.
As a fan just watching the game, it was great. This game had it all. A shortie, a PP goal, empty netter, a fight, a couple of huge CLEAN hits, and players like Copp, Appleton, Connor, Roslovic, Ehlers and Laine playing great offensively, but as part of a 200 foot game.
If they can continue, and Maurice can continue making the style adjustments to suit the opponent, this is the type of winning that can conceivably keep the Jets in the thick of either top Wildcard, or 3rd in the division.
Lots of hockey to go, so I'm not counting them out of it yet.
Go Jets Go!
