Risto has been playing well since Torts sat him early LAST season, he has given credit to the coaching staff and has said that he wished he was able to have learned under them earlier in his career. His minutes have been much higher and his overall game is a solid 3-4 Dman.. Some would rather stick a fork in their eye than admit it because it goes against the complain about everything..
He should still be traded. He's 30 years old. His age does not match up with the timeline the Flyers can compete for the Stanley Cup. I can acknowledge he and/or the coaching staff have turned him into a respectable but I don't care about him playing well enough as a 3-4 D-man just to make the playoffs.

When I watch watch Risto now, in an admittedly small viewing sample, I see the same lack of good and timely decision making that always existed. I can buy that the coaches have him playing a little better habitually, but he still isn’t anything worth keeping around.
After watching the Flyers last night, I have come to the sad conclusion that they are neither a good team nor a bad team. They are simply just mediocre. In their current make-up, they are not bad enough to obtain high level talent via the draft, nor are they good enough to beat the good teams on a consistent basis. The problem with this is the management group suffers from extreme Group Think. As long as they are middle of the pack, this group will always believe they are closer to a SC (cut to Jim Carrey..."so you are saying there is a chane") than to the bottom feeders (where the real talent is acquired).

Richard is 28, Abols is 29, if you trade Laughton, they're good short-term patches.
Unfortunately, the younger forwards in LHV aren't ready for prime-time.
Which isn't surprising, given where they were drafted:
Tuomaala (2nd), Rizzo (7th), Gaucher (UDFA), Wisdom (4th), Desnoyers (5th), Avon (UDFA), Gendron (7th).
The best forward prospects, Jett, Barkey, Knuble, Bump, Ciernak, Berglund, Ruohonen

That is not an exciting group of forward prospects in the least. I'm sure the D prospects are better.

Barkey is almost 2 ppg since a slow start, 13g 1-11 12, coming off mono.
Knuble is averaging 1.25 ppg as the only serious offensive threat for Notre Dame.
Bump is now up to a ppg off a recent heater 5g 4-4 8 after a slow start.
Berglund (injured) was chosen for the Swedish WJC team, Ruohonen was solid for Finland.
Ciernak is putting up good metrics (@Appleyard) on a bad team.
No superstars in this group, but possibly some solid players, Barkey is playing at a very high level in the CHL, but concerns about size, question is how much can he fill out and can he improve his skating- we'll get a better feel next season when he's at LHV.

A rebuilding team should be very willing to accept the temporary short-term "hole" in the lineup from trading Risto in exchange for future assets.

Can't help but notice Barkey and Bonk never get the "London inflates scoring tag" like the University of Denver.

I don't like the fact that when the Flyers get a power play, I kind of sag and feel like it's going to be 2 minutes of downgraded play.
Ristolainen has gone from a bad player to a reliable but still mediocre 3rd pair level defender. In Tortorella's conservative tight checking structure, he has less decisions to make. Less opportunity for his poor hockey sense to shine through. He has some value if the Flyers would be willing to retain or take back a bad contract but otherwise, is still the same player he has always been. He's just playing in a tighter, more conservative defensive first system. He has become more aggressive offensively, which is good because that has really been his most redeeming quality in his career.

Hes a 4-5 D man at best, which is much better than the 7-8 he was, but at his age and cap hit, Pack Your Shit and get out of here !
I usually leave the room or check the phone, the absolute worst part of any Flyers game.

Well, when Magua applies it to Catton and Cristall and Van Holm . . .
London is more of a team scoring thing this season, they're loaded up and down the lineup.
Usually in the CHL and NCAA it's one loaded top line (see BC).
Which raises the "Miami" question, remember when they had like 6 DL drafted high and only Wilfork turned out to be a good pro, the others looked good b/c single blocking against mediocre college OL. You have to see a player's performance in the context of their team and usage.
