Somewhat competive is one thing, first place in mid year is absurd. The NHL is a joke of a league. Could you imagine this happening in the NFL or MLB?

It’s not like at the beginning of the season people saw this coming. Guys are performing exceptionally well so they’re winning.

In related news Ryan Hartman cross checked an innocent pedestrian at a cross walk on Michigan Ave.

Why is it a bad thing? I'm genuinely confused as to why you think this reflects poorly on the league.

I just don't like it and it rubs me the wrong way. Why gift a team so many good players? Why? What happened to earning it? Every expansion team in professional team sports history has struggled for the first few years and then got better thru good drafting, trades, free agency. Ya know, the old fashioned why of building a successful franchise.

Ah, the "Good old days" argument. I'll stop here thanks.

Well, they were wrong. Vegas had to pay something like 550 million to be allowed in the league and in return the amount of players that had to be exposed was much more than in previous expansion years. Every team lost players that they did not want to lose and it really hurt most team's depth. Vegas is in 1st place and is very likely to make the playoffs in their first year. It's absurd and the facts speak for themselves. Maybe Seattle can pay even more to Buttman and they can win the cup in their first year. Thats of course if Vegas doesn't do it this year.

This is not really true...
The Rangers lost their 4C
The Jackets lost their 3/4C who all of a sudden is playing around PPG (because he's shooting 27% 5v5...)
The Wild lost their 3/4C who all of a sudden is playing near a PPG pace
The Panthers gave them two of their better players for no apparent reason

Very few of their players would have had significant roles if they were on their old teams outside of the Panthers guys and James Neal. None of their dmen would have been top guys on their old guys. Maybe McNabb because LA doesn't have much after Martinez/Doughty/Muzzin but the Bruins never gave Miller ice time, Hunt was always a scratch, Engelland always a third pairing guy, Theodore acquired via trade and Ana has a ton of dmen, Possibly Schmidt would be on the 2nd pairing in WSH.

Not every one of their players is a superstar but they had some very good players gifted to them much more liberally than previous expansion years. I guess paying over 500 million to Buttman and his cronies paid off.

I still can't get over this. Florida got body bagged and we all watched in horror/fascination.

They have a bunch of random 3rd/4th liners that are wildly outperforming anything they've ever done before, known good players like Marchessault/Smith/Neal/Perron, and some good prospects in Tuch/Theodore.

They had very few good players gifted to them - outside of FLA.

we’ve been hot garbage lately but I want to be optimistic.

I want to look at this stretch as Hank being god and keeping us afloat while we struggle and we will turn a corner soon and be better. That’s what I’m hoping.

They are in first place. They have more points than every team in the league except Tampa. They are 3rd in goal differential. They are 17-2-1 at home. They just had an 8 game winning streak snapped. Don't you think that is strange for an expansion team to be this good at the midway point of the season. Does this bother anybody but me?

I’ll be on a flight this evening so unfortunately I will be unable to rant with the group if things go south this evening

It's fitting that you'll miss this game as the real OL will miss it.

I bet Buch gets scratched if Zucc is healthy. Just a feeling.

Possible, Lettieri was playing over him in OT yesterday.

Its a fireable offense on the surface, but the GM seems to allow the coach to do whatever he wants. This is the guy that preferred Glass in the playoffs over Hayes and Buch,

People please wake up. An expansion team full of 3rd and 4th line players is in first place because THEY PLAY IN VEGAS. EVERY TEAM THAT SHOWS UP PARTYS THEIR FACES OFF AND ARE HUNG OVER. PERIOD. HOW ELSE DO YOU EXPLAIN 17-2 AT HOME. CMON NOW

mistake by Vegas to bench lindberg, would have been guranteed atleast 1 goal

GMs are incompetent.

1) they cant properly evaluate their players
2) they paid prospects to protect scrubs
3) they got screwed over by being forced to protect NMCs

McPhee didn't even handle the expansion draft that well. He had a lot of teams by the balls and let them go (picking JF Berube over CDH or Brock Nelson for example).

Good points here. And big-picture-wise it’s probably not a bad move. Not the way I’d want to do it from a fan’s perspective. But I can see the logic.
