To look at the past two games as a template for how this team needs to play to be successful is a bit unwise. We won both games because the goaltender was the difference maker. The game against Dallas was a game to emulate, not the last two. The idea that games aren't won 5-4, or other high scoring games in the playoffs is a silly notion as well. To win a cup you need to win all sorts of games, whether it's high scoring, low scoring, trading chances or a defensive stalemate.

Not being able to win high scoring games is why we didn't win a cup in 12-15.

Yea me either.
Hunt is a 4th/extra fwd kind of guy.
I see the foundation of our 3rd line starting next year, possibly earlier as
Goodrow-Barron-???
The ??? Filled eventually by Cuylle/Berard hopefully. Same hard nosed style.
Goodrow did his best work with Tampa as a 3LW. I’d like to keep him there if Kreids is ok on the right.

I made a post last night imagining a line of Goodow-Kreider-Zib. Might be crazy enough to work.

yes sir. The road isn’t always pretty. Every win isn’t going to be picture perfect or where we outclass the other team. Those kind of games need to happen more often for sure, but in order to go to the playoffs and beyond, your goalie needs to steal some, so do your stars or bottom 6 when one or the other is underperforming at any given night.
The key is working hard and giving yourself a chance to win every game.
Last year there were too many games that we all knew were over before they started. Or if it was close, 9 outta 10 times we’d come up short.
We need to keep up that hungry, work hard, compete level. Good things will follow

we won both games because we have a great goaltender and we played a very good third period on the road exhausted. This isn’t video game hockey.

we lose those games all day long in previous years.

I’d honestly be fine stacking up Panarin-Zib-Kreider until the roster gets a bit healthier.

Laf and Blais showed some good chemistry in preseason, I’d be interested to see them paired together again.

I could get into this, between Chytil. I like Laf at the end of last season with Zib but early on this season he is not being assertive. He is looking to make a play to either Zib or Kreider instead of making a play himself. Kakko had the same issue last season.

The reason we won that game was because of our bottom 6.. In the past we would be toilet paper soft and not wear down a a team, they would wear us down.. I saw more hitting the 1st 5 games than in the last 10 seasons.. just imagine if we could get P, Z, C S, and Miller to make two decent hits a gam.

Underrated post and spot on. Cheers

We should 100% stack that line. It makes sense and all those players compliment eacht other well.

It's a nightmare for teams... Colorado does it. Boston does it. Tampa has it's 2 best players together. A lot of top offenses do it.

I support whatever line combinations and pairing do something to improve on getting through the neutral zone cleanly.

If that means instructing the 3rd and 4th lines to play chip-and-chase on every zone entry that isn't an odd man rush, I'm all for it.

Let the skill players be fancy. Let the grinders grind and make the opponent play 200 feet.

It’s just a disaster in the offensive zone, and the neutral zone. Aaaaaand the defensive zone.

Just disjointed in all three zones. It just seems like they never know what the plan is.

I think theyve actually been quite good in the defensive zone. Even last night, they were dong a good job of keeping the Leafs on the outside, and when they didnt, Igor had plenty of clear lanes to see the puck. Theyve been much better clearing the crease too, with Trouba leading the way.

The changes come in spurts in the O-zone but they will be better. Still think their neutral zone decision making has been very bad

Without Shesterkin this game is 7-1, not a lot has changed really, we got doubled in shots and outplayed all night. The Zibanejad goal should have been a save by Campbell.
We really only got outplayed in the second. The first period was pretty even at 5v5. The third period we pushed back big time and the last 7 or 8 minutes we had the momentum.

Zibanejad is a premiere goal scorer in this league, we don't have to quibble over "stoppable" goals that he scores. It was a slick shot to the top corner through a defenseman screening the goalie, Mika having the shot that he does - that's a high quality chance. If it's McKegg taking that shot, you're right that's a save but thankfully for us it was Mika.
