I complained about him and Kyle Smith last year, and I’m gonna do it again now: Phil Housley is absolutely terrible at coaching defensemen and everyone sans Fox has had horrible habits creep into their game because of him. Miller overextends himself trying to make plays and puts himself out of position. Schneider and Trouba get baited into going down way too often and completely take themselves out of plays. Lindgren has just disintegrated into a shell of a human.

This guy got a good rep for being responsible for a defense that had Shea Weber, Roman Josi, Matthias Ekholm, Ryan Ellis, and Seth Jones and has coasted through his coaching career since. I’d maybe give him leeway if they compensated in other areas, but constant breakdowns in basic fundamentals of defense is just inexcusable at the NHL level.

i was straight up ridiculed this summer for making the point that the player who plays a style of game that we need to embody to win in the playoffs is kakko.

he plays a tough, physical possession style below the dots that wears down the opponent and is defensively responsible.

y'all insisted he couldn't be offensively productive but ignored that he was playing with nick bonino, with jonny brodzinsky.

now you're seeing what an extended opportunity with talented linemates can do for a players confidence, production, and overall game.

he's 24. this is not the guy you trade. if you want to throw him away for pennies, you just don't understand the game you're watching.
Yup.

They decided they hate Jones for no reason.

We've been shitty since Lindgren came back, which tracks, but that's also when Jones stopped getting regular time.
And when the team stopped scoring

A big part of NYR marketing is pushing players who try hard, whether they are good or not.

And it seeps into the fandom.
I mean Trocheck tries hard, actually does stuff.
Bonino tried hard but was terrible.

One of those is on our 1st line.
The other we fired into the sun to boisterous applause.

So no. The fans want players who are good who also give the appropriate amount of effort.

How about the fact that our forwards kept blowing the defensive zone early tonight. I watched Rempe and edstrom hanging in the neutral zone multiple times with the puck in our zone and not in control.
Mika was bad, Kreider had good moments but he also gave half effort.

This was a lack of effort loss.
The capitals are a middling team. They should never have out shot us, let alone make it difficult for us to transition to offense.

Lavi needs to split 93-20

Reward Kakko and chytil for their play. They’ve absolutely been our best line this season. Give them Kreider, see if separating the man crush will light a fire under Kreider at least, and maybe Mika realizes that he’s earned the demotion.

I dont think making kakko and chytil play with kreider is a reward. That sounds like punishment.

Their reward should be more ice team as a line with cuylle. Zibs and kreider should just play less even strength.

Maybe a good reward for kakko and chytil is more PP time.

ck had been fine in terms of effort until the past few games. Let’s give him a shot before completely writing him off. He was reported sick a few days ago.

chytil line has been consistently great all season and they’re being rewarded with points. bread line had an off night, but it’s not the end of the world and I know they can easily score 3 goals next game. it’s the mika line that continues to be the problem. he and kreider are f***ing horrible 5v5 and they’re showing no signs of improvement. lav needs to wake up and start holding them accountable. stop treating them like a top line threat. they’re playing like a mediocre 3rd line. and for f***s sake switch mika with laf on pp1 holy shit

Mika got a point on the PP so that bought him at least 40 more games on PP1.

Honestly, I think maybe you flip Chytil and Mika and leave everyone else in tact. Mika won’t disrupt the board play of Kakko and Cuylle because we all know Mika doesn’t go to those areas, maybe the 2 of them grind it out and find Mika for scoring chances. Then Chytil with Kreider and Smith, Kreider sucks transitioning the puck through the neutral zone while Chytil is great at the transition game. And then Smith is just the complimentary piece.
I don’t want to subject Kakko to more Mika. He’s been through enough.

That was ugly from the majority of the team but it’s time to start rotating some of the d out for jones and send Rempe back to the ahl. Not high on brodzinski but the 4th line is at least playable. Jones helps so much with transition and id rather watch him get bullied than our other “bigger” dman.
I don’t think the 4th line or jones were the problem today. We need more push, not less.

Miller and zbads need to gtfo. Pan and fox cant play against heavy teams. We won’t win with a soft core.

back to the whole team sucking because there's two whole defensive pairs that cant move the puck. people want to shit on Lindgren which is fair, he's awful, but maybe we should try and get Gus back because he's the only D partner so far that can make Schneider look like an NHL player.
How about dmen that can play d?

Mika's playing time gets reduced and this is how he responds? It's embarrassing.
No, his response was he’s bad because he needs to play more to get more touches. That’s actually a thing he said in Brooks’ latest column. No accountability with him. Doesn’t attend optional morning skates, just wants everything handed to him. He is literally the worst.
