I mean unless Yzerman is getting a long term player for the defense, you gotta upgrade it if youre heading into a potential playoff position. And would rather have Holl out there or someone like Martinez?

I'm skeptical that Martinez is actually an upgrade at this point in his career. Dude is getting caved.

So imo, buying at the deadline would mean addressing one or more of these:

-partner for Seider
-middle 6 forward (hopefully pushing depth down to the third or fourth line)
-Holl replacement on the third pairing

I've listed them in order of what I feel is most to least important--though the injury news to Copp makes me think that might make a middle-sixer more pressing. I do think any buying should NOT be for a rental unless it's cheap. With that in mind, any suggestions or thoughts?

The cap can be 110 million theres a 0% chance teams will be going after 6.5 mill 3rd pairing dman
It all depends on your defensive depth. For the Wings it won't really make sense as we have two guys that I think will be 25-30 min a night guys very soon. But I could see a 6.5 mil 3rd pair dman if you were doing more D by committee. If you were running more like a 20/20/20 setup and didn't really have any elite dmen, or if you had more of a 3rd pair offensive specialist I could see it creeping towards that.

Chia was solidly locking down the 3rd pair last year at 5.25 (6%)5. Ghost was 4.25 (5%). At 110 mil 6% would be 6.6 mil. I'm not paying a Holl that kind of money but a guy that could potentially move up the lineup if needed or an offensive specialist like a Ghost I could see creeping towards 6.5 at a 110 mil cap.

The only way a 6.5 mill dman makes a teams 3rd pairing just like a 5 mill foward makes 4th line is because it was a failed signing and someone better came along and replaced him. No one will go out of there way to sign a 6 million player and then place him on the 3rd pair

Everyone here was trying to move chiarot at one point. And if cap goes up stars will take up more of the money, teams wont be able to afford 6 million dmen in free agency for 3rd pairing duties

I would trade for an extended Trent Frederic, if Copp is out especially, they could use the center depth and if he comes back you throw him on a wing come playoff time. The type of player the wings need

I've thought of Frederic as well but to me that would mean using danielson in another big deal cause I see him more as a 3c (I'm sure others dont)

Id Try and be aggressive and dangle danielson in a package for Mason mctavish or cozens. Ducks seem like an underachieving team, bunch of kids but no huge stats for them.

Theyll be making moves sooner or later

Larkin
Cozens
Frederic

Or

Larkin
Mctavish
Frederic

I would personally just try and wait till the summer and get him in free agency and save the assets for another deal, I have someone else in mind for a trade from boston

Was looking at the dmen potentially available by trade frol what I seen around whether true or not

I think on the right side the best player to get is Brandon carlo. I dont know what the cost would be but big body 6'5 signed for 2 years at 4.1 . Allows pellikka to ease in on the 3rd pair for a few years + ppl time

Left side my preference would be k'andre Miller, bichsel, hague. Dont know if any of them are realistic, miller maybe if Drury gets trigger happy again

He's not my preference but was thinking I remember bruins trying to get rid of zadorov?? Still has 5 years left,if we can them to eat money, maybe trade a 3rd to like the hawks to eat another 5-600k and he comes down to say 3.75 even at 5 years left I'd take a shot

Oleksiak soucy and Matheson on the left side with 1 year left might be some I'd look at although mtl wont deam matheson without a 1st I would think

Really don't wanna get anyone with term if they are a 3rd pairing guy. That's my issue with Schenn, Carlo, Soucy and Oleksiak.
Carlo can play 2nd pair for 2 years ... oleksiak only has 1 year left and might be wrong but I'd say he can flip flop with chiarot ? Either way it's not a longterm deal for either player

Getting a seth jones ,parayko with 5 years I'd say is more a problem with pellika coming

Faulk is a guy to keep an eye on I'd think. Yzerman and Armstrong have swung a few deals in the past. He has two years left at $6.5M.

Here's the big name to investigate:

"Could Rantanen, Vejmelka join the trade bait board?

"TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger dropped two updates over the weekend regarding contract talks with pending unrestricted free agents, who could potentially hit the trade bait board.

"Dreger reports that the Carolina Hurricanes want to extend winger Mikko Rantanen after paying up to acquire him from the Colorado Avalanche last month, but may consider a trade as he remains unsure on committing long-term to the team. He added it's "too soon to say" how the situation will play out as the deadline draws closer.

"Rantanen has struggled early in his time with Carolina, posting one goal and two assists in seven games after scoring 25 goals and 39 assists for 64 points in 49 games with Colorado.

"The 28-year-old arrived with the Hurricanes on Jan. 24 in a deal involving the Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks. Carolina sent a 2025 third-round pick to the Blackhawks, and a 2025 second, a 2026 fourth, as well as forwards Martin Necas and Jack Drury to the Avs. And the Hurricanes also received Taylor Hall and Nils Juntorp in addition to Rantanen."

Rantanen is in the last year of a six-year, $55.5 million deal. The Blackhawks retained half of his $9.25 million in last month's trade, dropping it to $4.625 million for the remainder of this season."

Hi wings fans, I’m a blues fan who isn’t after your prospects.

What’s your feelers on binner?

Binner for Talbot and a pick sound tasty to you?

If you like side dishes I could add a Texier and you could add a tarasenko and another pick. We’d pick prospects and handle taking out the trash when the shift is over, you all could have some tasty dishes, maybe the playoff flavor. We could even sprinkle on some Toropchenko if you like that. I think your favorite part of the ordeal is that there is exactly 1 bonafide champion caliber goaltender on the market and let’s be real, he isn’t going to be super expensive if he’s traded, blues aren’t exactly dealing from a position of strength, and my favorite part of the ordeal is that I want to pick in the first round more than I currently can, and you know what, my dude just became canadas hero so if I can ride that wave loook at meee goooooo! -he doesn’t fit our window and legit it would be fun to watch him this upcoming playoffs. We won’t be there probably. A first and a pylon gets it done for me, happy to add whatever I need to satisfy your appetite.
He’s been really poor when it counts since the cup run 6 years ago. 3.22 GAA in the playoffs. Politely, no thanks.

I think I might have found another option for the redwings at left side d... cant believe I never thought of it and we have a relationship with the gm.

Lian bichsel ... 6'7 230 turns 21 this year . Yes please

Dallas have harley heiskenen and lindell on the left side already. I dont know what we can offer but the 2025 1st obviously , since they're cup contenders now ...

berggren/veleno/tarasenko 50%?/gustafsson for the right side?/copp with retention?/

I dont know but I'm liking that option

Bichsel 6'7 seider 6'3
Edvinsson 6'6 pellika 5'10
Buium 6'3/wallinder 6'4 johansson 6

Cleveland 6'5 - anton johansson 6'4

Cossa 6'6

Back end is gonna be dreadful for teams ... I'd seriously look at him as an option
Bichsel would take way more than we’d be willingly to give up. He’s their top prospect. Imagine what it’d take for us to give up ASP.

I mean I’d give up any prospect that isn’t Nate Danielson, buchelnikov or Sebastian cossa for bichsel. He’s going to be that good and his intangibles are unreal. But they wouldn’t want prospects for him, they’d want a very good roster player. The only guy we have they might move him for that we also might move would be debrincat.

Agreed. They are in win-now mode, futures won’t move the needle much for them. Not a good trade partner.

Let’s all be realistic with ourselves. Whether we like it or not if Chicago retains on Seth jones and his contract turns to 7mill x 5 yzerman is going to be all over that. He’s exactly the type of defenseman our FO likes. So prepare.
