I saw an interview on Swedish TV with Jonathan Ericsson a couple of weeks ago during a Red Wings game. He talked about his last seasons as a Wing and mentioned how some of the young players had bad attitudes, noting that some of them would still be really happy after scoring 1+1, even if the team lost. His analysis was that teams today place more focus on scouting for attitude issues than before. This made me think about the difference between the Holland guys (AA, Mantha, Svech, Smith, Mrazek, and Zadina) and the SY guys (Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson, Kasper, Cossa, and Augustine). It feels like the prevalence of bad attitudes among young players has dropped in recent years, and I don’t think it’s just because of drafting higher. For example, SY asking Kirby Dach if he smokes w$$d shows the increased level of scrutiny in the mental due diligence now being done.

I am not surprised that Yzerman only has Larkin left from that group. I just hope Yzerman doesn't over do it in lieu of skill. You don't want Athanesiou but you can't expect every guy to be Larkin/Ras either.

This stat line is wild though:

You need a certain base level of self-awareness and professionalism (or "character" as the kids say) in your picks.

Agreed. You also need an established base of leaders with the right kind of character to ground any mid guys you bring in. You still don't want the real rotten apples but you can afford a guy or two who needs to be grounded by those around him a bit.

That 19-20 team basically had no one. It can't all be grinders and 3rd pair dmen. You need some of your top guys to be those true character guys. Luckily I think we have that now in Larks, Seider, and Ray.

He has really improved. He's what Holl was expected to be.

He does, but not as bad as Petry.

Honestly? I'd take him. He and Chiarot could be a pairing of PURE CHAOS!

You guys must be looking at different stats than the ones I see. Even when watching him play he looks bad. Where has he improved? Last 48 GP he is -13 with 18 minutes a game. Philly is similar to us in lack of talent and poor blueline. What was his good season in any of the past 5 seasons?

Petry makes 2.75 for the rest of this season and then is gone. Risto makes near double that for 2 more seasons past this one. It is also sadly debatable that he is even better than Petry.

He plays within himself now with simple plays, and he brings size and snarl which wings have been lacking for a long time now outside of Seider.

This is last season, slightly worse this season but flyers have been a monstrosity so not surprising.

Who is BigE to talk shit about other players? If he cared abut the team, he would have retired and made cap space available.

Players on loser teams are going to focus on individual stats because the team has too many shitty players to win games. Otherwise it's hard to stay motivated. I played for a really shitty softball team, you bet I was keeping track of batting stats. Fortunately I blew out my throwing arm and wind up having to quit softball. (The team was so bad, I shifted from pitcher to left field knowing I'd have elbow issues.) The team eventually disbanded without ever winning a game.

Losing will cause bad attitudes, that's life.

Would trading for Jiricek make sense in the short and/or long term? Seems like he wants to play minutes that he isn't getting in Columbus.

Depends on return but I would look to trade for him for sure. He would probably be our #3D

There is no way he would be good enough to be 3 here. He is struggling and a healthy scratch in Columbus, and it isn't like they have an awesome team or something. He is also young enough that CBJ wouldn't give him away for cheap.

They would probably want something similar in return.

The ask would absolutely start Kasper. It's an immediate need, they are in the same draft class (6OA to 8OA), and positionally equivalent in importance. They could even make the argument that we would need to add given their performances in the NHL, injuries, etc.

You don't trade Top draft pick 2 years after their draft without getting something near comparable in value and at this point, I'd prefer Kasper

Also, not that it can't work, but we really need a top 4 LH D more than a right. ASP is going to have the RHD locked 2nd pair locked down (knock on wood).
