Again, justifying it.
It's ok to say "Yzerman didn't do well on this one", but some people make an excuse for everything. How dare anyone question the Lord and Saviour Stephen Gregory Yzerman. Shame on anyone who is critical of your Messiah.
I said that he did bad on the Walman trade. What the hell needs to be said that doesn't come off as an excuse.
I'm just saying that It is also true that Edmonton giving San Jose a 1st does not make Yzerman's trade of Walman any worse than it already was. Walman before this year was not returning a 1st from anyone. It was awful, beyond awful, that he felt he needed to dump Walman so bad he gave up a second.
I can only think it's because he had a trade for Trouba lined up or he was in talks with Stammer and valued the 3M he freed up more than the Jake Walman he traded. Terrible trade though.
But Edmonton trading for him does not make it worse than it already was. Walman had a really solid year in San Jose being given top pairing time and that's what Edmonton is paying for. And Edmonton is feeling the pinch to make adds because they weren't able to win the Cup and their cap world is about to be shake, rattle, and rolled in the coming years.
My point is that the Jake Walman trade, terrible as it was, is kinda inconsequential as to why Detroit is where it's at and it's more based on taking guys like Grewe, Tuomisto, Buium, McIsaac, Veleno, etc. who looked good on prospect lists but who haven't been tracking to be even average NHL players.
Once upon a time Ben Chiarot was worth a 1st at the TDL. Tanner Jeannot ended up getting like 2/3rds of a draft traded for him.
