Thus far in 2025.....

OUT: ($10.225)
Pettersson ($4.025)
O'Connor ($.925)
Puljujarvi ($.775)
Bunting ($4.500)
2026 4th

IN: ($9.275)
Heinen ($2.250)
Fernstrom
2025 1st *
2028 5th
Kolyachonok ($.775)
Novac ($3.500)
Schenn ($2.750)
That looks rather positive for us so far.

Let's add a few new draft picks though on the IN and drop some guys.

His comments do make me feel he'll be active, I'm just not sure he'll be active in the way I want.

Beauvillier, Grzelcyk and Acciari all feel like they're definitely gone, and Schenn and Rakell are gone if they get a good enough offer.
Agreed. Beauvillier, Grzelcyk and to a lesser extent Acciari need to be gone if anything of positive value is offered. Based on the rumours out there it sounds like there is some interest in those guys so they need to be gone for me to be ok with this deadline.

I will plant this flag now so that I don't get accused of rationalization after the deadline: it's impossible to know if Dubas made the right decision holding on to Schenn and/or Rakell unless there are credible leaks saying what offers were on the table.

Like if Friedman say Toronto offered Minten/Cowan/Danford for Schenn and he's still here then I riot.

If Dreger says Blake offered Clarke and a 1st for Rakell and he's still here then I riot.

But if it's radio silence on what was offered I won't freak out just because guys with term are still here. Those guys can be moved in the offseason or next year's deadline when the Penguins have more retention spots to play with.

i thought that was exactly what you wanted him to do?

This was my worry. He’s not rebuilding which meant he should have just kept Jake.
Nah. The goal of trading Jake is to not only get the assets for him, but to get assets for the cap space that we aren't going to be giving him.
Yes, Guentzel is a great player, but he's only one player. It's a gamble to bet that the multiple pieces we get will collectively be better than he is, but it is possible.

Washington’s two top scorers are former 3rd overall picks that weren’t be used correctly.

Protas and McMichael were in the AHL for a bit but they were drafted 6 years ago.

I don’t see similarities between what we’re doing and what they did.

Of course you don't see it, it hasn't happened yet, it's a template. Obviously it will be different players, different coaches, different draft spots... Washington did it one way, which ended up being quicker than the way Chicago or Detroit has done it.

And who knows if Dubas is following this same strategy... We can only look at what other teams have done, and say, ok Washington turned it around fairly quick and they started with the AHL, then progress into their step 2 then step 3 etc etc.

The only similarities so far, is building a solid foundation through the AHL.... If they are doing the retool like Washington we are not at the stage to gauge the higher end draft picks, because we don't have them yet, and will be minimum 2 years from that.

We used it on Hayes and Glass who came with picks which would suggest rebuilding.

I’m just going to sit back and see where he goes from here so I can better understand what he’s doing. Getting younger and getting more competitive seems like an eat your cake and have it too, but we’ll see.

Could this team "compete" next year? This requires a lot (win #1 pick to get Schaefer, sign Chychrun and Marner in free agency, trade for Geekie's RFA rights) but the team actually looks young with a lot of upside.

I think there would be a huge issue with signing Marner then playing him with Novak. He either rides wing For Sid or Geno. The goaltending and coaching keeps us bottom 10. Marner is a high end penalty killer and Sullivan is not using him there, he wants his plugs to stand and get hit.

It a pretty big upgrade over what is here now however.

So we’re now at Guentzel for

Novak
Schenn
2024 2nd (Brunicke)
Koivunen
Ponomarev
Lucius

Plus used his cap for

Hayes
2026 2nd
2025 3rd
Glass
2025 3rd
2026 6th

Really puts the quantity in quantity over quality but gotta think something comes of all that. I hope.

Honestly all that matters in that package to me are Koivunen and Brunicke. If both pan out, anything beyond that is gravy. It's a win to get 2 young NHLers out of that IMO.

What is this based on? He uses Rust on the PK.

I think Marner may only sign here if he's playing with Crosby, which is something that needs to be figured out. Issue though is that Malkin-Crosby-Marner is loading up the top line far too much IMO.

He's not putting 2 wingers out on the PK and he's had a hard on for Rust for the past 10 years even though he's not that great at the PK.. Marner won't see the usage and Rust will continue to.

Who says they'd have to play together?

Go with Lizotte-Rust as one PK duo and Glass-Marner as a PK duo. This team runs with 3 PKing duos.

Okay, can you please provide a link that proves me wrong so that I can update my reply to this?
I’m not going to do that again. There’s plenty of evidence from Jake’s camp and Dubas even admitted it at the end of the press conference that it was on him.

It’s one thing to say the trade as good or bad. But stop trying to make Jake the villain when he very clearly wanted to stay here.

The bolded would be ideal to rotate players/prospects in to see what works. But you're right, Sully isn't taking Rust off line 1 lol

I'm skeptical of it... Sullivan has a type, and Marner is the light, non physical, scoring type, he won't put him on the PK. He has to galaxy brain everything, but then does nothing.

I agree with you, I think those PK units would be pretty effective. I would love to see that lineup you posted earlier too... But we have Sullivan mucking everything up. He won't line match, he won't utilize players to their best lines and pairings, his PKers are immobile puck posts, his powerplay is insane.

If this team set the lines like you have them, yup, I agree.... The goaltending needs to be upgraded, it's an abomination.

But you can give Sullivan team USA and he will still make bad lineup choices and have hurt players in the lineup taking spots away from players who can contribute, while deploying a system that will fail.

So, yes, your theoretical lineup is great (except for goaltending) , but the reality is Sullivan will shit it out.

So you basically whine that i'm making stuff up, then when asked, without any snark, to please show me I'm wrong, you basically become the champion of the age of anti-intellectualism and make shit up and tell me your fantasies are better than everyone else's reality.

In the last 24 hours you've proven yourself to be a real useful addition to a pile of rocks. Good luck in your future endeavours.
