I think Rod the Bod is part of the problem there. Not that he’s a bad coach but his system seems to be more restrictive for the sake of good team defense.

Have seen some analysis that Rantanen feasts/plays best when he can work off a puck carrier on the rush. Canes don’t have that

Haven't seen him in Anaheim but when I watched him a bit in Seattle he was pretty much exactly the same. But they didn't utilize him as a top pairing guy like Sully often did pairing him with Letang.

After listening a bit more to the major pundits last night, I'm only about 50/50 on whether or not Rakell gets moved. I think the "he will have similar value come summer" is actually quite valid. What I can see is Dubas asking for what he thinks that value is AND an extra asset like a 2nd/3rd or a quality prospect. If you get it, you get your homerun. If not, you trade him for the actual market value in the summer once the new cap takes over.

Additionally, I'm not convinced that he's #1 on anyone's list. With Rantanen and Boeser available, as well as a guy like Brock Nelson, I think quite a few dominos have to fall and things have to line up right. Rakell's contract has to fit into a team's plans for the next three years AND they have to be willing to pay AND they have to miss out on flashier toys. So I honestly think the market for Rakell is thinner than we might think.

That said, I think it was reported that Dubas wanted to make his deals today because if he sends out roster players, they might not be able to call up and get a guy out to Vegas in time before they play.

I always wondered why the league doesnt have the TDL and maybe day after off for this reason. Plus, it seems like a small courtesy to give guys 48 hours to process and travel after having their lives completely uprooted.

The idea is they don’t have personnel. Rantanen feasted not only because it was MacKinnon but because of how he played. CAR traded the one guy that can go end to end and carry the puck himself on entries consistently in Necas.

Aho is great but plays differently than guys like prime Toews, MacK, Barzal, Necas, etc. i guess Rantanen plays better when someone can control the puck through the NZ into the OZ

If this team is absolutely insistent on competing while Crosby is still here:

1. Trade Rakell for Clarke
2. Sign Marchand to a 2 year, $10 million AAV deal in free agency
3. Run with Marchand-Crosby-Rust for the rest of Crosby's career

I've been mentioning Marner a bunch, but Marchand is a legitimate alternative if this team is insistent on competing before Crosby's career is done. Sell high on Rakell and bring in Marchand to replace him, who's both good friends with Crosby and has shown to mesh well with Crosby.

Right now it seems like the winger market is being held up by Rantanen. Teams won't move on Rakell until his situation is resolved. Carolina needs to figure out their shit asap
