Salary Cap: '24-'25 Salary Thread: Crosbicles Volume MMXXVI: Sid is Still Goat

Hate to be cliche, but these feel like dominoes....

Not sure why you get Novak who is only a couple years younger and one mill cheaper plus Luke Schenn who has years left unless you're planning something else. Doesn't fit any logical plan. Plus clearing out Desharnais because??

Either we're flipping Luke Schenn for someone more expensive, or we're acquiring a slightly more reliable defenseman than Desharnais because we're trading a bigger one and need some wiggle room cap-wise. Stinks of Karlsson with retention or we're including one of our other D in a bigger trade.

Because we turned a mid ass winger into what could potentially be a top six center?

Couldn't give a shit less about Bunting tbh. No idea who Novak is but a cursory search seems to say he's a whatever 3C. Schenn's just kinda, there, I guess. Maybe they flip him?

They gotta take advantage of the year Rakell's having and the current trade market man. I'll be so annoyed if they miss the opportunity presenting itself here.

Rantanen's gonna cost a ton and you don't know if he's re-signing, and if he does, it's gonna be north of $13M AAV probably. It's pretty much Rakell or Tuch for most teams interested in adding up front, I'd imagine.

If you trade Rakell for a package that includes Clarke and you trade Karlsson in the offseason, it's not the worst thing to have Schenn as your third pairing right defenseman.

But we'll see what happens.

Feels like if they end up keeping both guys it does kind of signal that the intend to add as soon as this summer. Really doesn't make any sense to keep a 35 year old Schenn otherwise, if there's a market for him. Let's see what happens though

Man, the whole "urgently try to get back to contention in the next couple seasons" thing's gotta f***ing die, dude. This team's a head coach, two *legit* top 6 forwards, better bottom 6 depth, a completely revamped blueline, and a starting goalie away from even thinking about it.
And by the time all that happens, Sid likely won't be a PPG guy, Malkin will be retired and Letang will barely be a bottom pair guy

I don't really see an issue with keeping Schenn, you'd likely get a solid return for him as a rental next year as well as this year. This team's defense is also criminally soft, he brings a useful element to the defense.

His age makes it a bit weird but I wouldn't have an issue keeping him beyond the deadline, nor would I have an issue with trading him before the deadline.

Unlike most UFA years, there's actually a franchise level star sitting there, so unless the door on Marner is closed I don't think we should rule out trying entirely. Still think it's sort of likely Schenn is traded, but it's also very likely Karlsson is traded now or in July so keeping him isn't a terrible idea and you can always trade him next year.

I can't wait for the overpay...Minten cmon down

(PS I AM JOKING...)

Also for anyone thinking that Dregs/CJ tweet is gospel, please remember that the insiders are basically talking heads to drive up the price
Their tweets are almost exactly the same, so they clearly have the same source - likely Dubas - who could very well be using them to increase the market.

"We don't HAVE to trade Luke. We like him!"

Don't forget, Dubas outright said that Jeff Petry was going to play an important role for the Penguins and then traded him to back to Montreal.
