Salary Cap: '24-'25 Salary Thread: Crosbicles Volume MMXXVI: Sid is Still Goat

One, you're never getting close to his value, even at age 37.

Two, the only way to get the maximum return - even recognizing it'll still fall short of his value - is to do it when there are the most number of potential suitors. That's not now, with everyone pressed up against the cap and trying to squeeze every last penny. Sid's not prohibitively expensive, but he still carries a decent cap hit.

So despite this being a major seller's market, it's the worst time to hypothetically trade a player like him. He's not Ray Bourque, trying to win that elusive Cup, so time isn't really of the essence either.

That makes this a draft day/offseason deal, when teams have more flexibility.

Also, any team he'd be hypothetically interested in would have to be a contender. So that diminishes the value of the first round picks, because they'd likely be late first rounders.

I think the haul has to be something like:
No. 1 prospect
No. 2 prospect
First round pick
Above average roster player

So, hypothetically, if it's Colorado then the haul includes Cal Ritchie, Mikhail Gulyayev, Casey Mittelstadt, and a first round pick.

Some will say that's too much. Some will say that's not enough. And that's why you don't trade Sid. No one will be happy.
I agree with your theory.

That said, I remember the haul (of total garbage) that we got when we traded Jagr to the Caps way back when; the return we gave Calgary for Iginla was also....basically nothing.

Not remotely comparable, though.

Iginla was a classic Bourque situation, it was at the deadline, and he had full control. Jagr was a bankruptcy move and pre-Salary Cap moves shouldn't be used in comparison.

I actually think Novak makes a good bit of sense for the Penguins. He has been a very good ES producer for the past couple of years, with a 2.13 points/60 and a 2.79 points/60 in the last 2 years. He's having a down year, but I'd rather have him than Bunting at this point.

Schenn is super weird though. I don't understand that one at all, unless he's getting flipped. Nor do I understand why Nashville is trading Novak for Bunting.

It’s basically the nuclear hotline between the US and Russia. Whenever someone needs to look busy they just pick up the phone and a deck chair shuffling takes place

"Look Barry... my boss Mike has been on my ass all day about making some moves to 'make a run' - he's not a smart man but he runs the show. So lets rummage around a bit in the bins and make it look like we're busy, eh?"

Bro you know how every particle has an opposite counterpart? You’re literally the Anti-Andy. You immediately think this is weird but after 25 seconds you’re like so f***ing positive about it.

This isn’t an insult. I’m just submitting this as part of my nobel prize application for a new particle discovery.
