Washington also didn't hemorrhage draft picks and prospects like JR did in the 2018-2021 window, which is a major part why they're good now.

With how the Penguins were operated from 2018-2023, there was simply no chance that this team could be a playoff team once the core slowed down.

Is that true? Washington picked 7 times in 2018. We picked 4. Washington picked 4 times in 2019 we picked 5. Washington picked 5 times in 2020 we picked 5. Washington 6 times in 2021. We picked 5.

Just seems like a lot of excuses to make around here. The reality is Sullivan is a terrible coach and our GMs have sucked at player evaluation for years.

I'd bet it's largely on Sullivan considering players like Granlund, McCann, etc continue to have success on other teams.

Also, you can see it this year. We are in a transitional year and he's not even trying to develop players. He'd rather ice Matt Nieto.

They wouldn't have this shit of a roster if they were getting better results the last 7 years.

They probably would have taken a run at keeping Guentzel.
Smith and Eller probably wouldn't have begged to get out of here.
They probably wouldn't have traded Petts and DOC.
They probably wouldn't have taken on cap dumps like Hayes and Glass.
They probably wouldn't have signed guys with the best case scenario of flipping them for a 4th at the deadline like Gryz and Beau.

Moves were made to give Sullivan the team he said he needed to be successful, then more moves were made because those moves didn't work, and it has continued to snowball until Dubas pulled the railroad switch and they started heading towards Rebuild City.

So, no, I don't give Sullivan a pass for missing the playoffs this year because he's the biggest reason they have this roster.
And Sullivan is the one who continues to play bums like Neito, Acciari etc while there's good players lighting it up in WBS. I can't blame Dubas for putting Eller out in overtime last year against the Leafs when the Pens were 2 points out of the playoffs. Sullivan deserves no grace or credit. The team is completely f***ed mostly because of him

This team would be heading towards Rebuild City even had they won multiple cups from 2018-2023, unless they would have moved on from Malkin and Letang and replaced them with a prime aged Malkin and Letang.
That's hilarious if you think they'd still have this roster if they were contenders in 2023.

Take me down to Rebuild City
Where the Coach is Mike and the posts are shittay.

You're forgetting the "and prospects" part. JR drafted Addison and Hallander in 2018, only to trade them later. JR drafted Clang in 2020 only for Hextall to trade him for Rakell later.

All the Penguins have to show for the 2017-2021 drafts at this point are Hallander's RFA rights, Poulin, Puustinen, Blomqvist and Broz. Washington has Fehevary, McMichael and Protas all as significant NHL contributors from those drafts, and those are just the notable names on the NHL team.

Protas (43 points in 52 games) and McMichael (39 points in 52 games) this season alone are likely more than what the Penguins will get out of those 5 drafts combined.

Weird how when you play your prospects they suddenly work out!

What makes you think Sully doesn’t have a strong say in who gets called up?

Dubas is on record saying he wants to leave the WBS guys in WBS to be on a winning team. I'm positive that the only reason Imama is up is because they want these guys to stay on WBS to win rather than lose with the Penguins. I just think that's dumb.

Dubas was also cognizant of his attempts to keep the team competitive by acquiring veteran depth in recent trades while a growing number of Penguins prospects mature with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Dubas affirmed that no prospect will find themselves blocked from their NHL opportunity, but they have to earn it—there will be no weekend furloughs from WBS just to get a taste of the big show.

“I think what we would like to do with the players from Wilkes is continue–They’ve really built a strong thing down there in terms of their performance night in and night out. I like the way that they respond when things don’t go well,” Dubas said. “(The team) has been really pushed, especially of late, by the younger players that we’ve brought in here via the draft, have acquired, or were here before that have really come on.

“I think what we want to do with those players is–when they earn the opportunity to come up and not just play for a weekend, but play for a prolonged stretch–once they earn it, we’re not going to deny them that opportunity.”

Dubas is just as guilty of this.

he wants to keep them not playing the right way as long as possible.
 love ya sully

It's pretty wild to see people call MP "prime Alex Edler" and "great offensively and solid defensively" when we are like 2 years removed from him having such little value around the league that even Hextall couldn't justify selling him for what people offered.

It's because those people are wrong and make player judgements based solely on JFresh charts.

Dubas is just as guilty of this.
He could make every right move and admittedly would still hate him. His personality reminds me of every dbag in the corporate world.

Also, while I’m complaining, Dubas said he’s gathering assets to trade when young players become available. Laine could have been had for nothing.
