Yea, but the East sucks bad this year and the powerplay is fixed. So why not actually be pro-active? Why does everything have to be some process? Being paralyzed by a process is stupid - if an opportunity presents itself, take it. I understand still wanting to sell of some older pieces, but there's no reason why this team can't be the 7 or 8 seed in the East this season either.

If you can improve the team without giving up valuable assets, and if you can still focus on the proper development path for your young players, then sure.
That's why they did the Tomasino deal. Who knows what he'll turn out to be, but the move fulfilled two things: 1) It gave the Pens a young potential scoring option with pedigree, 2) It didn't cost much at all.
This team hasn't shown enough to warrant risking a player's development though. They could fire Jarry into the sun tomorrow and promote Blomqvist, but the team in front of him could just as easily implode and turn every game into a shooting gallery throughout the next few months. That won't help his long-term development.
What is the max we could possibly get for Rickie Raks at the deadline if he keeps producing?

Exactly what assets can we realistically acquire to make this joke of a roster competitive? And why bother when the maximum this "competitive team" can achieve would be making the playoffs and being annihilated?
It's the height of delusion to think we can go on year after year with ever older Sid and Geno and weaker supporting cast and still be "competitive". Cut the cord already. Or at least change the f***ing coach and see if the new guy can perform a miracle like the Caps coach.

Anthony Beauvillier — Over the last month, Beauvillier has one goal and no assists and his average ice time has slumped to just over 10 minutes per game (the lowest on the team among forwards in this stretch). He’s become a non-factor on a team with too many passengers.
Cody Glass — Similar to Beauvillier, Glass has been too vanilla this season. He doesn’t stand out, he doesn’t get to dangerous areas with the puck, he just doesn’t do much of anything. That’s resulted in no goals and two assists in the last 14 games this month, which for a player who has been bouncing between the second and third lines isn’t going to cut it.
Noel Acciari and his usage — Acciari is an easy target given the recency effect of giving away the game with his crucial turnover against Tampa, which he readily acknowledged afterwards. Acciari’s averaged almost 14 minutes of ice time in the last month, a lot of that is PK, which has also been struggling lately (eight goals against in the last seven games, to only a 55% success rate). It’s one thing for Acciari to be a lineup regular when the focused area and reasons he are in there are working, but it’s not working right now.

I’m back to the strip it down and rebuild. It’s going to take several years to get back so just bite the bullet and do it.

Hobson’s choice definition #2 - the necessity of accepting one of two or more equally objectionable alternatives.
Some may say it’s not a necessity but until team falls completely out of the playoffs, at least in the points race, these are our two alternatives. Maybe Blom or Larsson get a call up in March unless 35 or 39 is injured.

Look, Acciari is bad at a lot of things, but the Penguins are an average penalty kill team and he plays by far the most of any Penguins forward on the PK. I would rather trade for DOC if I was Edmonton because he's a better overall player and a cheaper cap hit, but let's not pretend Acciari is bad at something he's actually pretty good at.

He was traded to Washington and is in the last year of his three year deal. There was no opportunity to resign him.
This is what is a bit frustrating when it comes to Acciari. "He's PK's and tries hard!" Yeah, but he f***ing sucks at it. We talk about guys like Puljujarvi not being in and roster spots being limited because he "doesn't" PK but would his numbers be any worse than Acciari's if give the same time?
I would be inclined to agree but Blomqvist is posting a meager .905 sv% (ish) in the AHL at the moment. He might need a bit more seasoning. Larsson however, has been doing quite well. I would imagine if Jarry or Neds went down or got traded, Larsson would get the call and it would be Blomqvist and Murashov in the AHL.
DOC would be the far more attractive asset to trade for being that his cap hit is much lower and not having the extra year. But honestly, if I'm Dubas, I have BOTH on the block. DOC with a "let's talk" price tag and Acciari for a "clearance" level price.
