Salary Cap: '24-'25 Salary Thread: Crosbicles Volume MMXXV - Poolman and Poolparty?!?

JT Miller's a malcontent who f***ed up the Canucks lockerroom so badly Tocchet and JR were shitting on him publicly. Coupled with a full NMC, you're not getting much for that kinda guy.

Petts probably isn't bringing back jack shit because he's having a dogshit year.
The Farabee/Frost trade was absolute shit for Philly too.

Could just be two bad gms making bad deals. But I hope we don't have our own new bad deals to laugh about soon.

Aside from The Untouchable Rust, this team doesn't have anything worth caring about the return on anyway. Shit, Rust probably isn't worth much even after his NTC drops this summer. /shrug

Still, the team should go into next season with Petts, EK, Rust, Rakell and Bunting having been traded imo. No more of this bullshit, half-assed stuff. Accept reality and if Sid gets all sad, he'll get over it.

I think that Miller return confirms 2 things:

1. JR can't shut his mouth and he hurts his team by not being able to shut up.
2. Players over 30 with term have depreciated value relative to their performance, but they're still capable of bringing back okay value.

My interpretation of this return applied to Rakell is that you can trade Rakell without any sort of retention, but the return will be pretty underwhelming. Think "cap dump and a 2nd round pick" type of return.

Yeah, I don't think you have to retain to move any of Bunting, Rust or Rakell. But I think you *should* retain to try and maximize value, since cap space doesn't matter anymore.

Your retention slots beyond this year should be EK (pretty much a requirement, and maybe at 50%, in order to hope to get anything of value back), one of the aforementioned three wingers--whoever brings the best return, and you keep a slot open in case you can be a third team in a trade to retain in exchange for a pick or young player of value if the situation comes up.

There's no reason to retain or buy out Jarry or Graves. I feel like goalies can always be moved, but Dubas has to accept he'll get zero in return, and Graves is just here to stay imo. Doesn't matter, and probably helps the tanking effort if they both stick around tbh.

Sid will have his record if he gets PPG this year. Next year we should absolutely be tanking for McKenna. Raks can go in the off-season, Petts deadline, EK maybe this off-season, maybe next. Rust... we can dream. It would be nice if he had the reputation around the league that he has with the Pitt media. EK also isn't a bad guy just to keep around to keep the offense ticking over without preventing us from tanking. If we're only getting like a 2nd and having to retain a buttload I probably wouldn't bother.

Yeah, I think EK is only ever gonna happen in the off season, and you have to wait for Rust's NTC to drop on July 1st and hopefully you can fleece a desperate team that just missed out on a scoring line winger in FA. Petts should be gone already imo, and I'd definitely be aggressively shopping Rakell while he has some value. Bunting's a guy you move whenever you find a trade.

It's addition by subtraction to try and set up this team to chase McKenna and Dupont in the next two drafts imo. Sid's PPG streak doesn't matter. Sid's feelings don't matter. If the team needs to spend to reach the floor, you just take on some more Hayes/Glass guys for picks. /shrug

Dunno if this was posted yet but

Cap hits for guys like Rakell, Rust, and even Graves and Jarry probably don't really matter at all in a couple years. McDavid's new deal is gonna be like $25M AAV.

Miller return is meaningless. The entire world knew someone had to go, the entire world knew the Canucks preferred to move miller, miller has a NMC and an average NHL career left on his contract, and the Canucks are currently out of the playoffs while their world burns. The pressures to get this done and to get it done soon meant they were never getting a ton back. And I think most of the negative reaction to the trade is because people keep saying “chytil is one hit from retirement,” but like, so is everyone, really. If the pick is pushed back to next season, are the protections gone? If so, this has the potential to be a remarkably good trade.

Getting rid of the noise, it's Chytil and a 1st for Miller which, all things considered, isn't terrible. You also get $3.5+mil in space and have an extra first to play with.

Oddly though, I really like Chytil. I like that return for Vancouver even though its low. i think as a 2C with good wings, Chytil has room to grow. He's also 25 not 31.

What I think is wild about the whole Rust saga is that, honestly, if we were going to pick one homegrown fully developed Pen to hold on to forever, it should have been Jake.

But Rust has been so pumped up as "playing the right way" in the team's PR and their own eyes that we held on to him instead. Just imagine a slightly different situation where we'd negotiated seriously with Jake and gave him the raise he wanted at the expense of shipping out Rust or other deadweight.
