Boston Bruins 24-25 Roster/Cap thread XIV

Different scenarios though. Stamkos wanted to get paid first and play for Tampa second. He was going to get his money. Period.

Marchand is (presumably) willing to play here for a discount. In addition to everything he's done for this team, he could be really valuable as a leader/mentor and most importantly, 25 goal scorer playing for a fraction of what he's worth.

What makes you think that?

If Tampa can move on from Stamkos because it's in the best interest of the team then we can move on from Marchand. It's time for this front office to put on it's big boy pants and be a little ruthless, stop catering to the players' every whim.

Stamkos was a UFA who they decided not to bring back. And not for nothing but the players were pissed

If a GM is worried about what so and so might think if I trade Marchand, who's on the decline and on an expiring contract, in a year where your more than likely not making the playoffs. Point blank, thats the wrong guy Managing your team.

Obviously it all depends on the return if you move him. Id want a near NHL ready prospects. looking at Carolina, Colorado and Dallas as possible destinations, as they have some pretty nice prospects, package a Carlo or Frederic with him, and whats stopping Marchand from coming back in the off season, you always keep that door open.

On the decline? He's on pace for 61pts after having little training in the off-season because he was recovering from 3 surgeries. He had 67pts in the two previous seasons, so all things considered, I have a hard time calling it a decline.

Better yet, only means the return would be greater, if you can find a GM who feels the same or Sweeney can use that argument. On top of that undeniably Marchy will be playing with a lot better supporting cast.

He can still shoot it for sure and really good in O zone when they have the puck. The other areas of his game though you can see age and or injury combined slowing him down. One of my fav all time players as a Bruin and if he stays I am OK with that.If he wants to try to win one last time that is fine too.

Then offer him that discounted contract before the deadline and have Marchand sign it. No more of this bullshit where they'll take care of all other business first and then see where they can fit him in sometime in August.

This is an A or B scenario that needs to be resolved before 3 PM Eastern on trade deadline day.
Why? What's bad about that approach? If you know Marchand is committed to signing here and will take 'whatever is left over' why force the issue now?

New caps just released…
2025-26: $95.5M
2026-27: $104M
2027-28: $113.5M

Going to be quite a few more players than usual opting to hit free agency over signing with current teams in the next couple of years I’d imagine

I love 4th line grinders that can hit, cause trouble and fight. I do not want to be paying those players 3 million plus because Sweeney has the money to do so. Fire his arrogant, inept ass now. Move Coyle, move Carlo, move Korpisalo (who has been very good) give one of the Providence goalies a chance for the rest of the season as back up. Go into next year with a ton of cap space and a GM who will spend it on an impact top 6 forward. They should have enough money to outbid everybody for Rantanen, do so, get a top line center, there are two currently on the block in Vancouver, get one.

Finish the season with this
Geekie-Zacha-Pasta
Marchand-Miller-Lysell
Frederic-Poitras-Lindholm
Jones-Kastelic-Brazeau
Zadorov-McAvoy
Lindholm-Peeke
Lohrei-Wotherspoon

Wow, two $10m jumps in the next 3 years.

Folks need to stop saying things like X is overpaid. There isn't a player on this roster who won't look like a steal 18 months from now.

Because things can change. This isn't like Bergeron or Krejci trying to keep the band together for one last dance with a team expected to be a contender next year. This is an organization at a cross-roads. I think in this case the right decision is a firm decision.

July 1st rolls around and say Colorado step up and make him a 4-year offer followed by a call from MacKinnon trying to convince him to accept it. Feelings can change awful quick.

Who saw Chris Tanev getting a 6-year offer at 34? David Backes left St. Louis over one more year of term. Everyone thought Iginla loved Boston and being a Bruin until Colorado came at him with a 3-year deal. Marleau never thought he'd leave San Jose after 20 years until multiple teams came calling on July 1st. Is Marchand and his agent putting their phones on do not disturb on July 1st if he's still without an extension. Just because Bergeron was willing to do it doesn't make it the right move with Marchand. I feel a decisive approach is the right approach here, not mid-summer cap gymnastics.
