Boston Bruins 24-25 Roster/Cap thread XIII

I’d target Lawson Crouse. Having a down year, but has scored 20+ goals previous three seasons. Big kid, 27 years old signed for 4.3m per for 2 more seasons after this year. He’ll give you more than Coyle on that 2nd RW. Could be a player who’d blossom here in a different hockey market.
Would Utah trade him and for what

What does a Dylan Cozens deal look like?

Detroit was close. So we would have to think they would trade with bruins.

Poitras,lysell, and carlo for cozens.

This is probably going to get roasted. But am I the only one thinking the Bs sell high on Geekie?

I think they could get him at a fair short term number as he’s an RFA this offseason and even if he hits 25 goals.

You can see his game has improved. He’s a lot more confident with the puck and has even created plays. Starting to wonder if he could be considered a solid top 6 contributor going forward.

But at the same time, how much of it could also be attributed to the resurgence of David Pastrnak?

Trading Geekie would be a massive FU to the team given the way he is playing right now.

An what does selling Geekie mean, what do you get in return. It is supposedly a weak draft, maybe a contender is willing to throw a late first at you? Yippie a guy who might help in 4-5 years. Maybe someone will trade a B or B+ prospect for him. Maybe you get lucky an get a young former first rounder who hasn't been able to establish himself.

I think if you put Geekie available there will be a number of teams interested, but I don't think his current hot streak has changed his trade value in any substantial way.

I don think its radical to say 39-18-88 is a legit RS first line. Arguably say 15-17 but worst case #20. Boston's issue is in the 2nd line. Coyle has regressed way to much to be relied upon as a top 6 guy and #63 is too old to be beyond spurts. Lindholm
has massively underperformed. So they need minimum two legit top 6 forwards.
Going to have to deal Marchand, Frederic, McAvoy and a #1 to get that. If not two top 6F then one top 6F and two #1.

I'd even go further and say the middle six is the issue.

They had something with Koepke-Kastelic-Beecher. Not that they were going to produce they way the started the season all year, but they are 3 of the 4 fastest forwards on the team and were good at keeping the Bruins in the offensive zone with sustained pressure.

The middle six is just a mess. If we say they have a 1st line and a 4th line, can they cobble together two more effective lines out of:

Marchand
Frederic
Jones
Lindholm
Poitras
Letteri
Coyle
Wahlstrom
Brazeau

You could even toss Lysell and Merkulov into the mix.

There doesn't seem to be any permutations that work. If Lindholm is one of the two centers, that means at least 2 of Poitras, Frederic, Coyle have to shift to the wing and I'd argue all 3 are better in the middle.

Marchand is strictly a LW, I'd say the same for Jones. I don't like Brazeau on his off-wing at all, I'm not sure what to say about Wahlstrom or Letteri. Lysell seems to be a RW only, Merkulov plays a lot of C in Providence but up here he's been used on the wing and his off-wing no less.

And to make changes, money has to go out the door, whether that money comes from this group (for example Coyle) or taken from the D (Carlo?).

At least with a rising cap they can probably address it in the off-season. I think they'll be hard pressed to fix this middle six between now and the deadline.

I think you have to explore a McAvoy trade. Not necessarily advocating to trade him, but if you need a major shakeup and want to bring back anything worthwhile it’d probably be him. I think the issue with him is as someone else said he’s trying to be something he’s not, trying to do too much, and maybe he’s not what everyone wants him to be offensively. If he can get there still, who knows?

Geekie hang onto if he’s not getting too much. Untapped potential, let’s see the consistency grow before a big payday and NMC. Anything I’ve read the Bs have always wanted to extend him so don’t think they’ll sell high with him.

I'm still in the Sell dept. Even if they get someone like Miller, they will still be out in the first or second round. This isn't their year. Get what you can for Carlo, Frederic, and others (in terms of prospects or picks).

Right now that Pasta line is clicking. Nice to watch. But thats the only line. They are a one line team. Easy to play against in the playoffs.

No. The guy would solve so, so many offense issues. I know he’ll be 34 soon, but he’s durable and is huge in front of the net. Also, don’t forget that he’s one of those rare guys with a neck wider than his head.
Kreider, is not a deal that would put an anchor on this team for years because he has a livable contract only 2 years after this, not like a J.T. Miller or as we all know a Elias Lindholm, but i am not giving up a #1 or a 27-year-old McAvoy, Find another way

Well how do you see this offseason going for him then?

Arbitration most likely especially if he hits 25 goals and Sweeney doesn’t want to pay him like that guy.

For me I just don’t want to see them pay him like he’s a top 6 guy when it’s on the coat tails of Pasta. Yeah that line is great when Geekie is being paid 2 mil. What about when he’s being paid 5?

I’m not opposed to keeping the guy. I just have some serious buyer beware. And who’s to say it’s picks they’re getting back if they do move him?

I have always liked Crouse, exactly what the Bruins could use. My question is what do give up?

I think Merk will come, and IMO, maybe he comes up after McAvoy and Lindholm return.

Trent Merk Lysell seems a little appealing to me as Trent can protect them, but defensively they could be a turnover machine lol
I think when kids like that get called up people tend to over critique them, Ive seen it with lohrei saying he's a turnover machine, sure he had turnovers but so did everyone and now Lohrei for me is a one man breakout machine, the kid is a must have in the Bruins line-up. Sure he'll still make mistakes but the good far out weighs the bad.

Elliot friedman saying that Petterson is still in play and the Sabres are making a big pitch. Not sure the Bruins could out bid the Sabres, but Sweeney should be all over this. Merk, Lysell, Frederic, Coyle, Zacha, Poitras Carlo let me Know what you want Mr. Alvin ?

That feels like a overpay. I know Cozens was very good in 22/23 the year everyone in Buffalo had a monster season. But he is about to turn 24, and is having a poor season.

I think Cozens can be a solid second line center in the league, and he has good size. He is ahead of Poitras in development, so he could help more now.

I give props to a guy like Merk for remaining engaged while watching plugs like Brown/Jones/Leiterri get call up’s and some extended looks for the latter.

What a message you’re sending to your young talent. Especially with some of the regulars not named above continuing not to contribute.

I would think so, Utah GM Bill armstrong is on record,as saying he's open for trades.

“We're moving into that era where we've got good young players coming,” Armstrong said. “We've still got some picks to go, but some trades will have to be made on our side to further up the club and take that next step."

Armstrong noted you don’t totally build a Stanley Cup champion through the draft. Sure, you can find your core pieces and skilled youth through the draft, but trades are a huge part of building a winning team.

“50% of a Stanley Cup team is traded for, so you've got to go out there and make adjustments and really add into what your club needs.”

The Lindholm signing was stupid. It was like something Mike Milbury would have done. Zadorov, on the other hand, was an excellent signing. He was exactly what we needed. Overpayment? No.

Lindholm, like Coyle would be fine if slotted correctly.

This teams lack of a true, legit #1 center has hamstrung them since Bergeron retired.

This is why I’m all for JT Miller coming here.

Sabres need to trade some of their many young assets. They could be so much better with just a few smart trades.

Lindholm was not signed to be a number one. They just didn’t have any decent centers.
As far as Geekie, sell sell sell high. A month ago, nobody wanted him here long term. Everyone wants to trade third liners for first liners. Good luck. Hope they sell this coming months. They are fooling themselves if they don’t. Charlie J needs to understand where the team is. They’re not getting the old man a cup. They blew it when they went for it.

I would imagine Merk is out next year and prob Lysell also. Who do they have coming up. I would trade existing roster players and fill in with those two. You need to know if they can play. This couple of games shit is stupid. The downward fall will continue if they don’t start to make the move.

Zach’s been great - watch last 2 games isolate on him

He’s sacrificing some offense to play higher in zone and play defense
Zacha and Pasta are Great together and of Course Geekie has rounded that line out making it one of the best in the NHL ATT. Often a great line consist of two stars and then a guy who just fits in, adds great chemistry or unbelievable defense awareness to form a top trio.

In this Case Pasta has taken not one, but two players who normally wouldn't be close to a teams first line and has been able to make them first line players, that gives this team a shot every night, just an undeniable superstar.

I am not against the player, but I am against the contract at the age, you already have one life sentence, in Lindholm, now if he was going the other way maybe.

With the cap going up, his deal will be in line with 2C’s relatively soon.

If there was a perfect, infallible way to construct a championship team in a short time, everyone would do it.

Sometimes, unfortunately, you have to put the cart before the horse and maybe overpay a bit for the cart.

But in the end…you can’t move anywhere without the cart and the horse, so the order you get them doesn’t matter.

Trade proposals is not my area of expertise. From looking at their roster I’d assume they need help on D at the right side. Carlo would fit like a glove there. Overpayment? Cap hits swap out.

Could Sweeney also get them to include Barrett Hayton in a deal? 24 year old left shot center, signed at 2.65m for one more season beyond this & will be an RFA. 54% at the dot this season. 12G 14A 26P in 48 games. Scored 19 goals 2 seasons ago. Could be a diamond in the rough. I’ve watched him play a few times, not overly physical but really smart player.

Coyle (5.75m) + Carlo (4.1m) to Utah

Crouse (4.3m) + Hayton (2.65m) to Boston

This gives Utah some veteran leadership who’ve made some deep playoff runs. Bruins get younger & save some cap dollars.

Agreed, and to piggy back off of this post, this is why a retool is very possible and can work while the Bruins stay competitive. The Bruins need to build the middle 6 around Lindholm and Poitras at center. Marchand and Poitras don't fit too well together because they both like playing with the puck on their stick. Lindholm isn't getting moved so it would be best to keep him with Marchand and put Lysell/Merkulov at right wing.

Jones and Wahlstrom can be waived. Lettieri can be the extra forward. Maybe Sweeney can pull off a Haula/Zacha deal that involves Coyle being swapped for a winger. Then there's Frederic and Brazeau. They can either be packaged for a forward or traded for picks to be used to obtain another forward. Geekie has also played well with Poitras so if the Bruins go and get a legit top 6F Geekie can also be moved to Poitras' line.
