Just a bit of trivia on the Lucic trade back in 2015.

Since that deal they've never had a pick as low as the 13th overall they got from LA and used on "consensus pick" Zboril.

Colin Miller was poached by Vegas in their expansion draft.

Martin Jones was flipped for the 2016 1st rounder they used to select current fan favorite Trent Frederic.
My fav is the 5th round pick swap Minny turned into Kaprisov.Alot of people should not be working in those jobs ( all teams) to pass 4 rounds on that guy.

That's kind of my point, there is always a story with these guys and just not them saying "we f***ed up"
And even then, having the team back out is still a f***-up. If that’s what you were totally banking on and it wasn’t secured, then when it falls through, you scramble and start tossing your papers around and go: “uh um we choose uh… Shesyschewaun!” that’s a massive f***-up.

“Hey it’s not my fault. I wasn’t prepared for the draft so I put all my eggs into making another deal I failed to make. So as you can see, I’m 100% blameless.”

A Vancouver fan on the main board suggested...

Zacha, Zadorov and a protected 1st for JT Miller.

For folks saying Carlo, Zacha and a 1st doesn't get the conversation started, this was coming from one of their fans and nobody really pushed back on him.
I may regret saying this… but I don’t like this deal.

I don't like it for two reasons

1. Replacing Zacha with Miller is a win but the Bruins are still down a top 6 forward

2. Bruins are in no position to be including a 1st round pick for a guy who will be 32 in a couple of months.

I agree. I’ll add: all concerns about Zadorov considered, I wouldn’t want to lose him in this deal.

What am I missing here? Lucic since they weren't going to re-sign him I get...Hamilton deal was awful. First for Ullmark? That's a win? Zacha yes. Coyle yes. Peeke?

The funniest part about the Lucic and Hamilton deals was he got 4 picks in a draft "he had no time to study for"... made sense.
Why do you think this ? " No time to study for the 2015 draft" I just don't get this, what did he do lock himself in a Closet from 2006 till 2015. He began his front office career in 2006, as Director of Player Development to Director of Hockey Operations and onto Assistant General Manager for the prior 6 years before being promoted to GM. I find it very hard to believe Sweeney had very little knowledge gong into the 2015 draft.

Ive seen people hear blame Kieth Gretzky, Bradly, PC, hell just about everyone on the pay-roll, but in the end its the GMs job to make the final decision and I will never believe Sweeney never ever heard of Kyle Connor or Matt Barzal entering that 2015 draft, hell just purchase a red-line subscription.

I don’t even know (or think) this is actually believed. But it was used as an excuse by multiple people about why they whiffed so bad in the first round.

I don't like it either...for me it's a lot for Miller, although he does have that Savard feel around him - passionate

I'd still push for Carlo....
Bruins brass probably should be thinking about finding a future top C in his 20s .Anyhow I have no say in it so just have to wait & see what they do or don't do.

Big pass for me. Just don't see JT Miller being worth all that. I like Zadarov and what he brings to this team,Zacha and a future first Id just as soon keep as well, unless its for a Pettersson.

Good post. I disagree with your take on his drafting and your take on free agency. He has had some whiffs, but he's also picked up guys like Haula, who he turned into Zacha, and Ullmark who won a Vezina and he turned into a 1st round pick. I like Zadorov too. He's 2nd on the team in ice time, 58% Dzone starts and 2nd on the team in plus/minus. Lots of good minor free agent signings too, like Geekie, Brazeau, Nosek, Koepke... Free agency, like the draft, isn't going to hit all the time. I feel like his critics expect him to get everything right all the time, or always draft "the right guy" and never make a mistake because they seem to only focus on the mistakes and never acknowledge the wins. Take the draft for example, everyone focuses on the lack of a center, and that's true and fair, but he also needed to replace Chara and Rask, so he had 3 franchise holes to fill and he filled 2 of them. But that's never acknowledged, it's always "he should have reached for a player that turned out to be a star and I knew it all along because I read draft sites."

I also disagree that the mandate from Buffalo is to keep the Bruins profitable (or that that translates into building teams designed to fail in the first round). With the cap, the Bruins are a cash cow. They don't need to make the playoffs to be profitable, they don't need to win a round. I think your gripe was very true in the Sinden era but in my humble opinion you're holding onto something that died long ago.
You could be right about all of that.

You:re right about Ullmark and the signings you mentioned.

I certainly don't expect Sweeney to be right all the time.

He had a rough start, I think we can agree, weather drafting 2015 or free agent signings like Rick Nash. I was all for David Backus; unfortunately that did not work out.

You can say, as you did, that Sweeney filled two essential needs, but really, you build from the goal out and the center position is next in line in terms of being the critical position. It is inexplicable and frankly indefensible that Sweeney allowed both 37 and 46 to age out without doing anything to address the huge hole left in their absence.

I don't think it's too much to say that the mandate from Buffalo is profit. Is it as Central as it was under sending? No. It's also true that jacobs, having obtained his hard cap, has spent to it nearly every season. For this he deserves credit.

As he does for placing Charlie in charge of finding an outside general manager, who turned out to be the under appreciated Peter Chiarelli, who brought in Claude Julien after the Dave Lewis fiasco.

Has nobody previously, Sweeney has proven a very good General manager. He's not the general manager I want going forward. That's all. It took him nearly a decade to understand that speed and skill are not enough to win championships. They may get you through the regular season, but it is obvious that the post season is an entirely different matter.

Look at the record.

In the event, I guess we'll see,

That Vancouver fan just outed the trade. We'll get a 32 year old player on the verge of burnout, a guy who is questionable in the "room" for our 1st and our young and Zadorov.
Miller would be done here in a couple years with NO Cup and Sweeneely will be left holding their "Shmenza's."
Back To The Future."
And Neely who just basically proclaimed he cares about the "now" not so much the future" is preparing us for MOT. More of the Same, bread & Circus.
Yeah, let's "retool" with a 32 year old headcase, has been, never was (a Cup winner). He took 11 days away from the Canucks recently WHY?
Who knows, best case, he brings out the best in this crew. Worse case, we set ourselves back even further.
Then Jacobs can sell the team only, not the building, the concessions etc just the team to some lucky rich fans who will do as the Sabres owners do, stick their noses in and damage the team beyond repair.
I want Charlie Jacobs to look carefully at his hirings and if the go south like M'OC and Dave Lewis, have the brilliance to find the next Peter Chiarelli and (once again) change the culture if need be.
May I end this with saying that to a certain degree I feel Charlie Jacobs IS a fan of the team, but he'd be a bigger fan if they were the Sabres.

The way I see it, JT Miller was a nice player who's still very capable but has started his descent. He'll be 32 shortly and is getting $8MM per year until 2030. Vancouver is trying to solve their internal problem by shoving the older Miller off while keeping Pettersson. Should they want to do that, you don't help them. Perhaps with them retaining some salary and lowered expectations on return you have a conversation with them. Otherwise, let them stew on it and watch the trade value go down until, and maybe not at all, it's a more fitting/acceptable deal. I would also be more interested, as many others have already mentioned, if EP was the piece being moved. Let Vancouver, still one of our mortal enemies, choke on it.
