Watch the Kapanen goal. It was poetry in motion. Psychic level puck on a string. We actually played it as well as we could until we ran out of gas defending. Pens just knew where each other was. It was sick.
incredible shift. Globetrotter-like. One got the impression they can pull that out whenever they need to.

Dump & chase & get there a second too late to make a difference.

That second in time makes a huge difference. It means being able to take the man and pin him and allowing that man to make the outlet pass. We're not fast and/or stout enough to get in on the forecheck on a consistent basis, and last night we tried sending two men deep and got killed for it every single time by the Pens with their transition.

It looked like keep-away.

The Pens looked like a contender last night and we looked decidedly not.

Maybe it was an up game versus a down game the the gulf between the two teams seemed monstrous despite the 2 goal loss.

Someone with mental toughness doesnt pop a teammate for a chirp after the game.

We were hoping Sullivan would be available... After a 'rough' start he has been winning games with a lesser team.

He'll probably end up winning another cup while we miss the playoffs. The Penguins are just a superiorly coached team <compared to us>. They actually play like a team. Move as a unit. They dont skate into each other and/or look confused. There's no puck watching or hesitation. Everyone knows their role/job and they execute. It's intuitive for them... Quinn's team... Is a fumblin, bumblin mess. No one knows what to do. He is not an NHL head coach.

We are what we are. An under performing, poorly coached team. We're building a culture of excuses.. Is this what JD and Gorton had in mind?

P.S. - the cycle continues... We will have a good game here shortly, then slowly decay over a next 5 game period. Repeat with one good game.

It’s amazing watching the young guys on other teams produce. They might not win but they’re fun to watch. We don’t win and we aren’t fun to watch. Pretty amazing really with the kids we have and no one can score.

doesn’t matter if they’re first overall second overall 7th 9th 21st 27th 32nd forward or dman not named fox no one can come in and produce under this coaching staff.

so Gorton needs to ask himself is he drafting the wrong guys (no) or does he have a coach that doesn’t know what he’s doing? (Yes)

because it’s one or the other period

I am behind in game because I took time to do this. Just goes to show, that Mika simply is feeling forced in his decisions (self imposed) and not allowing things to come naturally. Pass when u should shoot, and vice versa.
He could have saucered it. Or, is it sauced? Lol.

Quoting myself and pic. I mean, they announced it was a "power fwd. move" by Zbad, which could mean he is feeling confident, bug dont hardly remember him ever doing that. Ordinarily, he would make a great pass in that situation. Just saying.

To me I keep coming back to, what is Dave Quinn hockey?

This season just about every team we’ve played has had a distinct “flavor”. You know when you play the Isles they are gonna trap, the Devils are going to play loose and trade chances, the Pens are gonna play tight as hell defensively in the neutral zone and slot and counterattack, the Bruins are going to play chippy and try to interfere as much as possible.

What is the Rangers “flavor”? Pure vanilla at best. I have no idea what type of structure and pace Quinn is trying to have these guys play to.

I'd like to know this as well.

I've asked the Quinntupletes this same exact question but have never gotten a straight answer but they swear that there is a system in place.

I'm assuming that they're trying to follow the Pittsburgh model more so than the other ones, but their D are way too loose with their gaps for that to be possible (the forwards OTOH have been better at closing people off in the NZ. I wouldn't classify it as good or consistent but theres a marked improvement here, a small feather in the hat of shit for Quinn.)

The one thing that irks me the most is that set transition efficiency is probably the #1 key to success in this league. We were pretty good with DeAngelo and his loss has been very obvious to us this season so far. We aren't good at getting the puck into the OZ with control, we're putrid at dumping it in and retrieving it, so it makes for an offense that sputters and looks disjointed and out of sync. Our Dump and chase is a dump and chill most of the time.

This is also why I look to move both Strome and Buchnevich for players who may not be as productive, but can help in other areas. Buchnevich has been good this year, but he's not outmuscling anyone or ever winning a puck race.

By the way Morgan Barron highly touted prospect is on a tear in the AHL. Quinn thought he was too nervous to make the team out of camp...ok.

who wants to put money on what happens when he gets up here? Slot him next to Howden on the fourth line and watch him fall on his face I’m sure.

Yes every pair of teammates to ever get in a fight are mentally fragile.

Both last year and this year, Georgiev has had the same consistent problem. He lets in a soft/bad goal, he gets pissed off and then the flood gates open. That is the very definition of a player that lacks mental toughness, especially the mental toughness required to be a #1 in the league. He doesn't shake it off and move on, it eats at him and then his mechanics break down.

he has zero ability to compose himself. Wheels come right off at the first sign of adversity. If things are going well for him he gets better and better as the game goes on. If there’s a bump in the road forget it. Total freak out someone gets worse and worse as the game goes on. He’s the worst kind of back up

what kinkaid gave you last night is exactly the definition of a reliable back up. Didn’t steal you the game but very much so gave you a chance to win. No ugly goals couple big saves and you had a chance to win. That’s what u want in a back up. Not a guy you have zero idea what he’s going to give you

An upset, yet spot on assessment. Something has to give here. ALL I ASKED was to be entertained while watching our kids BLOOM & PROSPER. This is NOT happening.
Yes, it takes time to "learn how to win", but if they feel "constrained" and not able to play to their strengths then we may never see them grow. Sad, really.

Anyone else notice we are "worse defensively" since Trouba is back? Or, is it because the Pens just schooled us, OR is it just me?

It’s just interesting to watch guys like Chytil go the ahl and tear it up. Morgan Barron tears it up. Kravtsov was getting MUCH better under knoblauch the second go of it after whatever happened between him and Quinn to start. The ahl is a HARD league to score in. The nhl is actually easier for a lot of the top guys.

but soon as they get here it’s a major issue.

In my view, they got schooled in both games, plain and simple.

No. Obviously I was being a bit dramatic. But there's some semblance of truth in it.
Probably the biggest reason for that is because of the yellow streak on our club for the most part . When one of our offensive catalysts have a chance to drive in a rebound they poke or swat at it and then are skating AWAY from the NET....instead of skating towards the net for possibly another rebound!!! Say what you want...we don't score many greasy goals over the course of a season . Just watch them...it is easy to see . It's just a small thing...but that stuff adds up . We have a couple of guys that will go straight to the net...but most don't because they might get roughed up .
