It could also be the Avs just using Dater as posturing for another C. Avs going to the motion with Kerfoot to try to scare the other team so they lower their asking price.

Also maybe Dumba is coming with him?
I mean Kerfoot and Dumba while dropping Ryjo would be an upgrade for this team 100%. But... we've seen Kerfoot in the playoffs and it isn't pretty.

Wouldn’t even be necessary.

You’re saving 500k alone from a straight swap. And I’m almost 100% sure it’s easier to move kerfoot in the offseason than it is RyJo.

Kerfoot is more versatile, younger, slightly cheaper, better production, etc.
I'd like Kerfoot at 1.75M for next year. At this price he'd be a valuable asset for a team in a cap crunch situation like us.

If we make that trade I'd pay AZ to retain.

Actually a RyJo for Kerfoot at 50% swap at the deadline would cost AZ around 3M in real money. It's not that bad.

Sure, if its cheap to retain, I would too. But Arizona isn’t the type to take on actual $$. Cap for them is no problem, actual dollars are.

Arizona already has one retained salary on the books, although I believe it is a weird one, so might not count. But if it does, the price for them to retain on Kerfoot might be quite high, with them also wanting to move Dumba and Zucker.

Here's the thing...

Kerfoot at full cap hit stapled to the 2C spot sucks. If that happens we're doomed. However, Kerfoot at 1.75M as a swiss army knife type of bottom 9 player for this year and next year is a very valuable asset.

Yeah that's true. If they were to bring in Kerfoot(at 1.75) and then a legit 2C next year that could be pretty nice for next year. Especially considering I feel like Kerfoots playmaking could compliment Colton and Wood pretty well.

The issue would be if Kerfoot is supposed to be the 2C fix for this season.

To me, bringing back Kerfoot is another middling option in the Wennberg tier, with the baggage of being a former player.

The pros are he's above average defensively, and does all of his offensive damage at even strength. Both of those are things the Avalanche need help with right now. Kerfoot's 9 power play points this year are by far his most since leaving Colorado; he had 9 power play points total in four seasons with Toronto, where he had 50 ES points one season.

We're all too familiar with the cons: consistency, size, and the question of whether he's really a center. He's played a lot of C this year, but is currently playing LW.

obviously, if Kerfoot is being brought in for 2C, that’s not acceptable.

Straight up for RyJo to play bottom 6 for this playoff run? No issues with that.

Playoffs-Kerfoot is certainly not ideal. Maybe we can mix Playoffs-Ryjo with RS-Kerfoot. That could be a pretty good combination.

That’s just it. Kerfoot as 2C is a terrible idea. Now bringing in Kerfoot and a 2C so you can run a bottom 6 of:

Wood - Colton - LOC
Cogs/Landy - Kerfoot - Kovy/Parise
(I don’t buy that if Landy comes back in the playoffs he’ll be ready for top 6 minutes/duties especially right away)

Well that would really improve the offensive depth and give you 2 lines in the bottom 6 that you’re comfortable throwing out there for 10+ minutes a game in the playoffs

You know what the worst part about Kerfoot would be?

He's signed for next year, which means they wouldn't be looking at him as just a rental solution for this year and re-evaluate in the summer. They'd be getting Kerfoot for the 2C spot for the next 2 years.

I'll just go ahead and say right now if Kerfoot ends up being the deal we make, the window is closed. That would be a contention closing trade.

I think I have the Avs figured out. They are acquiring Kerfoot so they can use him in a deal for Kadri with CGY. That worked out really good the first time around.

Not quite a « contention closing trade » that would be acquiring Huberdeau

Obviously like most I want the long term solution at 2C but those players feel unrealistic for this FO at the deadline.

I’d love loading up on depth as a 2nd option tho. People are to quick to shoot down certain names. Kerfoot by himself? Disaster. Kerfoot with retention followed up by a few more adds isn’t the worst thing in the world. Not sure if you can swing it with the cap but a Henrique/Kerfoot/Walker deadline without giving up Richie would awesome.
