Still a lot of "Ifs" to sort out, but.... IF the Avs can get a legit 2C, and IF Landy can come back for the playoffs, and IF the Avs could add a legit Dman still.

Team could absolutely win the cup this year:

1st + RyJo for Walker
Byram for Mittelstadt

Nuke - Mack - Mikko
Landy - 2C - Lehky
Wood - Colton - LOC
Drouin - Wagner/Cogs - Parise

Toews - Makar
Girard - Walker
Johnson - Manson

George
Annunen

Probably still want another Dman here, as we'd be 1 injury away from possibly having to use MacDermid in the playoffs. But otherwise that's a group arguably as deep as the 2022 team.

Annunen another solid game. He's got a history of getting hot in pressure situations in international tourneys too.

I wonder if that's enough to let him backup in the playoffs, instead of trading for a mystery box backup that has to learn the Avs system and tendencies?

I’d be willing to bet Malinski or Jones would be in before MacDermid during the playoffs

I think they still need to get a back up goalie for at least rest of this season. Have Annunen be the 3rd option, but he really looks like he might have a future in the NHL. If not starter, he might be a solid back up.

Ya probably, but that also doesn't instill the most confidence. Not sure Malinski is remotely ready for NHL playoff hockey yet and Jones is only a little better than MacDermid.

I'd like to see them grab another depth Dman if they made those trades. Even just a #6/7 type. Like a Chad Ruhwedal, Travis Dermott, or Joel Edmundson.

Would be very happy with that. A few things:

-Wouldn’t we be able to fit Mittlestadt and Walker in without needing to include RyJo?

-If we did include RyJo then you could fit EJ in as our 7D I think.

If we go after a winger like Guentzel it tells me Landeskog isn't coming back.
Or, that there are no #2C options out there that are any good, and we just try to overcompensate with good wingers and maybe just stick one to the middle (Mikko, looking at you while Bednar looks away).

I wonder how many other playoff teams are even looking for a backup?

If there aren't many, the Avs might get a decent guy for a 4th or 5th.
I don't know. Backup goaltender isn't a sexy move, so the insiders tend not to publish much on it, but most teams likely keep an eye out for improvements.

someone else brought it up not sure who - why don't we try Val at center? There's no way he could be worse than Mikko at it. He's got the wheels and defensive acumen and we can live with his offensive numbers taking a dip

If we go after a winger like Guentzel it tells me Landeskog isn't coming back. I mean adding another sniper would be nice, but who does he replace/send out? Rantanen/Nichuskin/Lehkonen/Drouin/Wood/LOC/Parise/Cogs aren't getting traded. Then there's Kovalenko and potentially Landeskog. There's just no room on the wing IMO.

The most likely guy might be Kubalik as a 12th/13th F, just for the X factor of having a guy that can score who has looked good in the playoffs before. I actually think he'd be a pretty good fit here and could maybe replace Kiviranta
I would tend to agree with this, you wouldn't go for a solid winger with the other holes we have if you are expecting Nuke and Landy back, and possibly adding Kovalenko.

If we add Guentzel, I'd say the likelihood is no Landy coming back.

They aren't, they are keeping Markstrom to send a message to the players that they don't give up.
Yeah. I do believe though that management was headed toward a rebuild, the winning streak happened, and now ownership is telling them to pull up.

Hanifin will probably still go but Markstrom won’t go until the offseason…if that.

Parise can probably play another year. He should stick around for one more season if Avs don’t win the cup this year to give it another try. If we do win the cup then he can retire. He did say this is his last year though so…
If we don't win this year, I wouldn't mind seeing both Parise and Cogs doing the same 'retirement routine' that Parise did this year and both sign after the All-Star break. Gives them a chance to rest and ramp-up for the end of season + playoffs - and gives the Avs a chance to play some young kids on the 4th line and see what they've got with those guys in the NHL.

Not bad but they would have tried it by now, wouldnt you think? Also, he'd need a facilitator like Rantanen or Drouin on his line.
