He's got three Stanley Cups and is going to end up being one of the best players in the history of the game. I'll never understand why he bitches about every single minor called against him.

Welcome to the 21st Century athlete.

LeBron James cries and yells at the ref more than anyone.

When ya look good against bottom feeder teams for 3 games then play a competitive NHL team

Bad positioning on the first and third. I don't blame goalies on breakaways bit he always looks defeated on a breakaway even before he's inevitability beaten.

The defense in front of him on the second and third sucked, but you need your goalie to make a save. He needs to stop one of those last two at least.
Pretty much

The Marino and Crosby goals were terrible.

He was completely out of position on the first goal and didn't track the puck on that weak floater from Crosby.

That is exactly what you want from a backup. You'll do better with a high variance goalie who is sometimes great/sometimes terrible than one who is consistently bad. This has already been shown mathematically to be a better option.

Wow really going out on a limb saying you don’t want a goalie that is consistently bad LOL.....no shit

you want a back up that consistently makes the saves you expect. Don’t need a guy that will steal you games just a guy that gives you a chance to win every night. A guy that is totally hit or miss is not a reliable back up

What about one who is consistently average?

A consistently average goalie wouldn't be a backup. But I am not sure. The reasoning is obviously that in the high variance goalies great games you will be very likely to win and in his bad games you will sometimes win. In a consistent bad goalie (so one who gives up 3 or 4 goals every single goal) you will just lose most of the time.

We're talking a backup goalie here. By definition he is not going to be very good, If he is good enough to give you a chance every night then he wouldn't be a backup. Exceptions are mostly young guys (like Georgiev) who have an established starter ahead. Something like Fleury/Lehner isn't a comparison that is a timeshare not a clear starter/backup situation.

Why can't a consistently average goalie be a backup? Plenty of teams have had two above-average goalies splitting time. When we rolled out Cam Talbot or Raanta or whoever, I would say they were average or better. You can absolutely have a backup who is average or better and I'd argue that we've had that for basically fifteen years now.
