I posted a while back about trading for both Petry and Myers. Both are flawed. Both are on shorter deals (Petry for 3 more years, Myers for 2 more years). Both are better options to partner with Dahlin and Power than anyone else in the organization, and won't cost much to get.

They both could mentor the young defenders, and by the time the Sabres' training wheels are off, their deals expire. Seems like a decent development option.

I suspect there will be pushback on these since there is a lot of people who want perfect rather than done.

But Sam isn’t soft.

Any player willing to go to high traffic areas or take punishment to make plays, score goals, etc are not soft. Its the guys who try to avoid that who are soft.

Not being physical does equate to being soft. Neither Mitts of last season or Sam are soft players.
OK when I say soft, I mean he's a guy that's not overly physical, goes out of the way to smash someone into the boards, or fight. I don't think that's a good reason to be doubtful if a player is going to be impactful moving forward. Just odd from Peters.

The problem with Myers is that he's been very bad defensively in recent years, I don't think that's a good mentor for Dahlin or Power as a player, as a person maybe good. Myers has looked decent defensively this season, but this may be an exception. There are better options than Myers and Petry.

He's actually been better this season. It's odd.

I'm wondering why, could this be an exception, or could it be like we had in Buffalo with Risto, when he looked good for a short stretch, and then he was bad again. We need a quality top 4 RD who consistently plays above average defensively for not the last 30-40 games, but at least a few seasons, imo.

Maybe Myers is at an age that he realizes what he is still able to do. Maybe he realized that if he's solid defensively, and doesn't worry about offense as much, he'll last in the league longer. :dunno:

Would love to get rid of Myers. Unless he is babysat by a really good dman, he sucks.
He isn't all bad, but he barely contributes anything offensively, and he makes such bad mistakes that result in easy goals against.
Any good he does, is erased by bone headed plays. He is a vastly overpaid, adventure on the back end. Anyone not seeing this, needs to watch the highlights of the recent game vs the kraken: the guy has double digit years in the league, yet has no clue how to defend against a 2 on 1.
If we can get some other Benning-level gm to fall for Myers' size, then we need to jump on that asap.

This is a Vancouver fan comment on the main board, some Risto vibes here.

Hell, I'd probably rather have Pysyk or Stecher as Power's mentor than Myers. Dahlin is out of the question at all, he does not need another partner with adventures, and for Dahlin to look after him, and not vice versa.

Strangely... there have been times I've seen him playing RD and some playing LD.

The Eichel/Reinhart/Risto trades gave me reason to trust Adams when it comes to patience on trades. In this case, I’m sure he realizes the selling low situation with Oloffson. I trust that he’ll identify what he would trade him for and hold firm. It’s not a UFA situation. Another defenseman I saw floated was Mayfield from NYI. I’m not sure his underlying numbers but by the eye test I’ve always thought he was pretty good. That’s a guy I’d probably trade Oloffson for.

My phone corrects it to that and this site is a nightmare to use on a phone for some reason, it refreshes in the middle of typing

Cold stove podcast guys say they haven’t heard anything on Olofsson. So it might be coming from outside the org.

Sabres are obviously selling. Says Pysyk is one guy could be traded then resigned. Says they’ve heard the Sabres may use draft capital to buy players with term at deadline. Mention 2nd line forward and RHD. Those are rumors, or inside info. For speculation: They speculated names Laine, Fiala. No D named. Interesting bits.

They also mentioned Boeser when spitballing. He's an interesting one. He's really good defensively but his skating is always knocked. He's having a comparatively down year, but you have to wonder if it's a fluke/down year or the beginning of a trend. If it's the former, buying low would be great. If not, you're likely locked into a big money deal for too long.

Murphy or Roy please.

Laine? Fiala? Adams made a special trip to watch the Columbus vs Toronto game, but I would have been surprised by Laine. Oloffson maybe gone? Adams looking for a top 6 scorer and some serious PP help?
Boeser could also be an option.

The only thing about Boeser is that QO is killer. It’s a complete non starter IMO.

True. But let's say he signs his QO. Ideally he returns to form and you can flip him next year for a profit. He'd still be an RFA after next season.

But I think he'd take less on a longer term deal. Something like $6.5M x 6 is fair.

Laine, Fiala and Boeser all three are RFA after this season, they fit the age of the core, all are top 6 scorers and decent help from PP. I would also add Konecny to this list, maybe it's time for him to change of scenery.

I imagine all 3 command a similar return that Reinhart did with their age, production, and contract situation. Boeser has a 7.5 dollar QO though and even though I really like him I would probably stay away. Fiala is the one I’m probably the most interested in because he’s signed and has a complete skill set. I like Konecny but I think he’s not as much of an impact player as some of these other guys.

I would think Johnson and the latest 1st rounder would be more than enough for Fiala

But Fiala will also need a contract after this season, he is RFA. Basically, whichever of these three it is, it is obvious that this should be a trade with the signing of a long-term contract.

Looking at a thought I had, until I saw he’s still on ELC next year: Andrew Peeke.
Looking at the depth of Columbus on RDs this can be a problem, but yes the Peeke would make sense for us.

I have to imagine that even tho the Isles will be in a cap crunch, they hold on to Mayfield at least through the TDL next season. Trading him only clears up $1.45M, and that’s a super easy contract to work with.

I would love to acquire him though.
