Rumor: 2026 Free Agent Frenzy

As a Columbus native, moving Werenski for Harley+ is basically a dream scenario for their situation. He would be trapped there for 8 years which solves their biggest problem.

Might suck in the short term as an Avs fan, but it probably makes Dallas worse in year 3 than they would be otherwise.

The 8-year contract is where the value is for Columbus. For that reason alone I don't think Dallas would have to add much (if at all). There's also the fact that Harley is 4 years younger.

The biggest problem is how it's going to be perceived by the players across the league. Harley signed 8 years with Dallas and gets traded to Columbus before the contract even starts. Not a good look.

How the fooq would he know Mats Zuccarello's favorite team growing up was the Avalanche?

And this is where Dallas would be wise to take a Vegas-like "We don't give a f***" approach. They are in win now. Their roster, while not old, tips more to aging than, say, San Jose or Anaheim, etc. Their window is narrowing. Columbus would get good mileage out of Harley but I definitely insist on Bourque and other pieces, including a 1st round 2027 pick and no lottery protection on it.

Yeah probably not a deal breaker for Dallas but it would make them look bad. The other thing is Harley could tell Columbus straight up that he doesn't want to play for them and would request a trade. In that case they'd not make the deal.

Jim Nill’s GM rep would go down, and he’d have one less phone to negotiate trades.

Harley has zero trade protection so far as I know. He can tell them whatever he wants. If he doesn't show up to camp, honor the contract, etc. he is in total violation. The message back to him is simple: "If you didn't want to play anywhere other than Dallas then your agent should have got you that protection. They didn't, so show up or you're going to suspended indefinitely without pay"

He couldn’t get protection. His first years of his contract are RFA years, he’s ineligible for trade protection

Yeah, I think that may be the thing. Guerin seems like he wants to go big game hunting for a 1C like Larkin and they migth not have the cap space to keep him.

The fact he hasn't signed already and Dater seems to have heard of the Avs interest is telling IMO.
It's telling me that guy is still a clueless schmuck.

He can show up and ask for a trade. I'm pretty damn sure CBJ don't want that.

f***ing Weekes posted a pic of Markstrom minutes before the trade got announced. So people started trusting him again.

Then he does the same with Hellebuyck but several hours later nothing happened. You just can't trust this guy.

I suppose anything is possible but I think players accept a trade is always possible. Look at JJ Peterka. Dude asked for a trade out of Buffalo, got sent to Utah last summer and signed a long term contract. They traded him to Boston after one season. I doubt he or anyone else would show up and say "I was traded against my will. I know you're still going to pay me the same but I'm so unprofessional that I won't play here so please trade me somewhere else." If that gets out the dude would be a) be voiding a contract that pays him 10.5 million a year and b) no GM in the league would give him that same amount. Not even close.

I think Zucc would work really well with Nelson.

Then again, f*** Brock Nelson. But:

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Necas
Lehkonen - Nelson - Zucc
Kelly - Kadri - Hughes
L'Heureux - Roy - O'Connor

Wouldn't be opposed to it.
I'm still gonna hold out hope that the Islanders needing a new captain might entice Brock to want to go back home.

Cbus should tell Harley he's got a contract and if he wants to sit at home and not get paid for 8 years he's free to do so.

A guy top pairing D on an 8 year contract would have huge value if they're able to be patient with trading him to the right buyer.

I think Zucc would be worth a shot...we could really use a talented playmaker. That said, I suspect he wants a nice payday above what he was making in Minny, so very much out of our budget.
