Speculation: 2025 Trade/Free Agency Thread

No because Cronin will run

Vatrano-McTavish-Marner
Cutter-Leo-Killorn
Zegras-Strome-Terry

Killorn had his moments where he was not finishing passes, but he scored nearly 20 goals and really helped shape Leo’s defensive game which has been key to separating him from his draft peers. It was the PP that really hurt Leo and Cutter’s production the most. Those two seemed to get the short end of the stick from coaching when a unit didn’t go well. Leo got demoted to the 2nd unit and was told to stay in front of the net taking away his playmaking a shooting abilities, while Cutter was told to watch this miserable PP from the bench.

I’m trying to figure out why the Ducks want to spend $13m/$15m for a 5’11” 180lb scorer who disappears in the playoffs.

There is no doubt Marner has elite talent. But he plays on an offense that is so potent, it is easier for him to score.

When one of the big 4 goes down in the playoffs it impacts Marner’s ability to score.

I don’t see the same impact on an anemic Ducks offense where he, not also Matthews, Nylander, and Tavares, and now Knies, are getting defensive attention.

I don’t see any elite UFA being signed here. I do see Verbeek moving the #9 pick, Zegras, and maybe Zellweger for an elite scorer.

So far Verbeek has dodged the bullet that some teams bit on high cost long term FA’s.

We have overpaid for so-so FA vets, but we haven’t been locked into long term.

When's the last time we made the playoffs? A 100 point scorer helps us get there

How do we know that getting Flyers 1st round pick for Desnoyers/Frondell/O'Brien will be better than McTavish ? That sets the rebuild back at least a few years.

My proposal was Flyers 1st 2025 (4th - 6th overall, depends how lottery goes) + Foerster + Noah Powell's rights.

RW Tyson Foerster is a year older than McTavish, RFA like McTavish and scored last season 20 goals (20+13 = 43 points) and this season 25 goals (25+18=48 points). Just like McTavish, he is not swiftiest skater, but bigger, more durable and more physical (my mind) than Mason.

And to Angelduck: In my mind McTavish’s ceiling, not floor, is a solid 2nd line center.

If Mason McTavish is your second line center you better have a really good linemates to him. He is not a line driver, he is more a passenger.

You’re entitled to your opinion but you’re essentially saying that you think McTavish is maxed out at his ceiling at 22 years old. That’s pretty unlikely to be true in my eyes

And I literally couldn’t possibly disagree with the bolded anymore. He’s been the line driver on every line he’s been on the past 2 seasons. He’s already proven he can drive a scoring line with mediocrity around him.

He’s one of the few players on the team that isn’t a passenger

A potential, affordable UFA RHD target (would probably have to move one of Gudas/Trouba/Helleson first):

I mentioned him earlier in the season as a Duck type of free agent, but we have that now in Helleson for that player profile. Plus he’s regressed this season and wouldn’t move the needle for us. Wouldn’t mind him for depth he came cheap though, but I’m guessing some team will overpay since he’s so young, has size, and a right shot.

I think we drafted his brother some years back, but can't recall him ever being signed.

I wonder if one of Mintyukov/Zellweger/Luneau gets moved in the off-season? I'm not sure I see a defence featuring all three of them plus LaCombe, unless Anaheim is deadset on turning Mintyukov into a defensive defenceman (which would be a tradegy).

Personally I feel like Zellweger is most likely to be moved to allow Luneau to come onto that 3rd pairing next season. Not that Zellweger is bad at all, definitely has good potential but feels the 'worst' fit among the three young defencemen for me.

Who are realistic impact players that could conceivably be available this summer? Via trade that is

Tuch would be my number one target personally. Buffalo was shopping him this year. Tampa was rumored to be heavily interested and they don't have the best prospect pool so it's tough to say what the value is. I don't think Buffalo will have interest in a Zell deal unless they move Byram. Maybe something like our 1st + Hinds. Rakell would be my fall back option. I don't want any part of the stupid long deals that will be given out in free agency.

I actually agree with you about the long deals in FA, however it seems given Verbeek’s comments yesterday he may not agree with us. At least this summer

Tuch is a nice fit. Good call @The Duck Knight ..

A top line of Gauthier-Carlsson-Tuch would be curtains for the opposition

I personally am not moving Zellweger until I see him with competent coaching. I’m higher on him than most though. I think he will be the next Montour for us if we trade him.

In UFA maybe Boeser just because he might not have a grossly overrated market. Although there seems to a ton of smoke with him to Minnesota. Could live with him at like 5x6.

If you believe in Minty and Luneau I think you have to move Zell. He's always going to be the weakest of the young D defensively. Is what he can do offensively THAT much better than Lacombe/Luneau/Minty to make up for it?

I can see that argument but I’m not sold on Mintyukov’s skating at this level.

I’m 50/50 on him vs Zellweger long term and would not move either until I see them for another season

Yeah I could understand kicking the decision down the road a year. Keep Luneau in the AHL and let Zell and Minty compete for 2nd PP minutes on a hopefully functioning unit. The risk being the production doesn't pop off and the value of both kind of stagnates.

Buffalo is not going to make any moves that puts them further away from the playoffs. If you want Tuch, offer something like McTavish that actually improves them. Another pick and another prospect does nothing for them.
