I’m all for pursuing Rantanen as a free agent, but count me out on trading for him, even if he comes with an extension. Not only will we have to give up a good lineup player (plus more), but he’s already been offered at least 8x$12.5M, so we would have to blow that out of the water for him to agree to stay with us.
He’s a very good player, but I’m getting skeptical that he’s going to be worth that much when he’s not with MacKinnon. I’ll give up cap space for him, but not much in terms of tradable assets.
EDIT: I also heard someone talk about an interesting strategy for Rantanen. If he does make it to UFA, a team with a lot of cap space (us, Chicago, San Jose, etc.) could offer him a huge number for 1 year (like $16M+), then offer him an 8 year extension when he’s eligible. It would be tough to beat the overall number of dollars he would get in that scenario, but it would have a little bit of extra risk for him, too.
