Ive been saying this. He is good at faceoffs too, so stick him next to Carlsson and Zegras.

But what realistically could the Ducks offer that Carolina would want? The Hurricanes are in win now and would want players to help this version of the team. If it was a sign and trade, it would be a lot more. I love the idea of Rantanen, but the cost seems to high and the match seems wrong. The Ducks need trade partners looking for picks and/or prospects.

I would give up someone good for him, if he comes with an extension. It would probably cost someone like McTavish/Luneau and a first though. Its certainly a gamble.

At some point, the record when scoring 3 goals or more in games isn’t a fluke. At some point it feels Verbeek owes it to this team to get them closer to a team that consistently do that night in and night out and see where it ends up

For whatever reason, I’m just not that big on Rantanen. Very good player obviously, but I get the feeling he’s benefited from playing with great players that we don’t have.

I won’t complain if we get him obviously though
I’m kinda to the point where idk that going after someone like that and trading 2-3 premium assets +…. Is really beneficial for us. I think we’re kinda in that grey area where it’s not to think about it…. But idk how worth it is long term.

Like no matter what we trade in a potential Rantanen trade, the team is better today…. But idk that it’s wise long term…. Unless PV is some trade genius and gets him relatively cheap

3 way trade maybe where Ducks get Rantanen and a goalie, Ducks unprotected 1st goes to a rebuilding team (and maybe a prospect?), Carolina gets a good player or two from the rebuilding team and Gibson? I'm not sure what good players are available from rebuilding teams... they might be able to get someone with term with our 1st.

All of a sudden the ducks aren’t a rebuilding team any more?

I’m all for pursuing Rantanen as a free agent, but count me out on trading for him, even if he comes with an extension. Not only will we have to give up a good lineup player (plus more), but he’s already been offered at least 8x$12.5M, so we would have to blow that out of the water for him to agree to stay with us.

He’s a very good player, but I’m getting skeptical that he’s going to be worth that much when he’s not with MacKinnon. I’ll give up cap space for him, but not much in terms of tradable assets.

EDIT: I also heard someone talk about an interesting strategy for Rantanen. If he does make it to UFA, a team with a lot of cap space (us, Chicago, San Jose, etc.) could offer him a huge number for 1 year (like $16M+), then offer him an 8 year extension when he’s eligible. It would be tough to beat the overall number of dollars he would get in that scenario, but it would have a little bit of extra risk for him, too.
