They'd be better off letting Tavaers walk and using that money to sign Marner and whatever is left to get some help on D.Marner is going to bend the Leafs over and give it to 'em raw.

There’s a prevailing industry belief that teams were preparing to offer Rantanen a free-agent deal that would match the $14 million AAV on Leon Draisaitl’s new contract in Edmonton this summer, and it’s only logical to conclude that something similar could be out there for Marner in a rising-cap environment.
A key difference in those contracts was Marner securing a full no-movement clause when eligible in Years 5 and 6, while Rantanen accepted a nine-team no-trade list.
That put them in vastly different positions in their platform season, with Rantanen getting blindsided by a Jan. 24 trade to Carolina when the Avalanche didn’t like the direction contract talks were going. That was followed by an awkward six-week period where he was a reluctant member of the Hurricanes before Rantanen signed his life-changing third NHL deal in Dallas.
Marner, meanwhile, could sleep easy all year long while knowing that he didn’t have to negotiate at all.

I probably either misspelled some shit or had a brain dead moment and didn’t complete a thought. I’m good for thiseOh shit... I think I quoted your wrong post? Did you just delete one?
I mean it's not really the same though. Necas wasn't coming back to CAR after his contract. Necas and the FO and coach did not get along well in Carolina. Their relationship was ending. Carolina taking a shot at getting an elite player 1) in return for Necas and 2) to give them that extra boost to win a cup makes plenty of sense. It was a risk for sure and it didn't pan out, but for a team trying to get over the hump some risks would need to be made.I wonder what everyone here would say if CMac traded away Rantanen and Mittelstadt this year, and ended up with Stankhoven and a bunch of picks?

But they swing and missed hard. Like worse than any team has in the past 10 years. At the very least, Marchand should have been traded to that team.I have absolute respect for the shot Carolina took.
They even almost had Marner.
Sometimes you swing and miss.
And in the end they traded Necas and Drury a 2nd and a 4th for Stankoven, 1st, 1st, 3rd, 3rd.I have absolute respect for the shot Carolina took.

Really impressive work by C-Mac. Sure, it cost a lot and we can get into why they were in those predicaments to begin with he navigated it well.
My only real complaints would be that last 6D spot and dumb and dumber still being on the team.

Contention years are precious. You can not waste them. Their work this year is on par with the Avs landing Eller at the deadline. Aho and Slavin are elite players in their prime. I can appreciate their aggressiveness trying to go all in twice, but they have failed twice with it.And in the end they traded Necas and Drury a 2nd and a 4th for Stankoven, 1st, 1st, 3rd, 3rd.
Obviously not ideal for a contender. But in a vacuum value wise it's really not bad. And we already knew that their team pre trade wasn't going to win a cup. Getting the chance to add a legit game breaker made all the sense in the world for them.
They might need to use a page from Tampa, and use those picks on someone with term alreadyContention years are precious. You can not waste them. Not even close to similar imo. I'd rather miss out on a contention year swinging and missing on an elite player than betting it on Lars f***ing Eller.Contention years are precious. I still can’t believe this.
Man, I do like Manson when he is healthy. It's just not very often. He is awesome player but injuries..Find a way to move out Manson and Wood and give that money to Nelson
