Yeah I'm not surprised that he's disappointed. Execs are just usually more diplomatic about it in my experience.

Something like "we're disappointed Carter wasn't selected for the team but we're very happy with his play so far this season"

Rather than kind of openly questioning his omission.

I'm of the same view. Failing to question these decisions reinforces their validity. I can totally get behind some of these players being left off the team, but to not even invite them to an evaluation camp of 30+ players is ludicrous.

Even though Yakemchuk should be at the camp, Staios looks like a fan rather than a general manager in his quote. He changes nothing by publicly complaining rather than making himself look somewhat less professional. Losing leads to changes.

Nothing wrong with what Staios said.. They aren't bringing the best possible team with all the omissions and they're trying to find some magic formula when you should just go with the best.

Look at the forwards on this team. This is not a team that is going to have a free-wheeling dman doing laps in the ozone. They want each line to have an identity. On defense, they want a first pair, a second pair, and a third pair, not 3 first pairs. They want the bottom-6 to play like a bottom-6. If Parekh isn't going to be PP1, and playing 18minutes+ a night, he has no place on the team.

If you were picking an NHL all star team, would you omit say Adam Fox for Brandon Carlo because Fox wouldn’t be on PP1 or be playing top pair minutes?

You take the best damn players. Not guys who are “used” to playing less minutes.

You're not making an all-star team. There are guys who are not elite offensively that are elite defensively that are better at playing a defensive role than guys who play top minutes on their NHL teams. Older players tend to have better defensive habits than younger players. It's not like the players left off were going to be playing in the top-6, or the top-4 of this team. The players left off are not much better offensively than the players on the team, and they aren't better defensively.

Instead of playing CIS teams in training camp every year fans should get to vote on an rejects team and that's who the camp roster has to play. If the rejects team wins the Canada coach is fired and replaced by the rejects coach who then has to include at least 6 players from the rejects roster on his final team. Both sides have something to play for.

If you think your roster constructed with role players is capable of beating what you deem inferior teams then prove it. If it's not then I'd love to find out now and correct it instead of finding out January 2nd when there's nothing left to be done but go home

I mean that would basically just be running the old school 40 man camp with more steps no? Like at that point you just invite them all to camp. Otherwise your idea makes literally no sense and doesn't actually prepare any of the players for the tournament like playing the U Sport teams would.

None of Gauthier, Howe, or Allen are a sure thing to make the team. Sure, Parekh, and Yakemchuk are better offensively than Gibson, but he's better defensively than both of them, and he's going to be the defensive half of his pairing. Dickinson, and Schaefer can run a PP nearly as effectively as either Yakemchuk, or Parekh, but they're both better defensively. Between Dickinson, Schaefer, and Moledyk, they don't really need more offense from the back end. They're going to have a dman who can transition the puck on every pairing. Misa is an 07, and they probably had a policy of not bringing more than 1 2007 player at each position. Generally this is what they do, so they have players who can act as mentors the following year. Iginla doesn't bring much more offense than anyone who will make the team, and he's a 2006. When you're making these teams, it's critical to appreciate that each birth year gets their turn as the main year. 2025 = 2005, 2026 = 2006, etc. Of the 31 players invited to camp, only 10 are not born in 2005. Anytime there is a close call between two players, they are going to take the older player.

I agree with you on the defensemen, if Gibson and Brunicke are the two RHD behind Bonk, then I have no issue with that, there are already so many offensively gifted defenseman. I would like to avoid Allen who has been bad at international events, but we shall see. I agree. We brought plumbers to Halifax and got bailed out by Bedard's brilliance. Brought plumbers last year and got what was coming. Pile some more plumbers into this team on home ice and I don't see Bedard to bail us out. Take the best talent and you will never be questioned.
