WJC: 2025 Team Canada Roster Talk

I just don't think he's to blame. He was being deployed with 3rd line minutes until tonight.

He's not to blame, but he didn't perform up to expectations either. To be fair, I don't think anyone on this team did.

For some reason every forward decided they had to take penalties this tournament.

Good for the players for going out having pushed as hard as they could, but this team was doomed to fail from the moment Anholt was named the GM again in July. I have been awake for 40 hours after travelling back from Canada so will write a longer analysis tomorrow, but a bitter end to a predictably disappointing tournament

Why does his age matter? He's the top player on this Canada roster. Likely the #1 pick next year.
Outside of Bedard, 16yo simply never dominate or are really difference makers this tournament. Crosby and McDavid weren’t anything special then either.

Not to dunk on these kids but has hockey Canada produced a superstar forward since the 2015 draft? Bédard and Celebrini look good but all of the stars who will play at the 4 nations have been in the league 10 years plus, which is shocking. Compare that to the dominant 2010 Olympic team which had Crosby, Toews, Getzlaf, Perry, Richards, Bergeron, Weber and Doughty as under 25 y/o players. Hockey Canada needs a serious overhaul especially in player development.

Something like this next year?

Hunter St. Martin - William Nichol - Hunter Laing
Kieron Walton - Kaden Pitre - Justin Poirier
Nathan Aspinall - Jonathan Morello - Riley Patterson
Clarke Caswell - Raoul Boilard - Tomas Mrsic
Porter Martone, Gavin McKenna

Nathan Mayes - Parker Alcos
Matt Lahey - Ty Henry
Xavier Velilleux - William McIsaac
Matthew Schaefer, Zayne Parekh

Ryerson Leenders
Chase Wutzee
Jack Ivankovic

Coach: Dave Cameron
Assistant: Steve Spott
Scratches: McKenna, Parekh, Ivankovic

They made endless stupid plays. Was the coaching poor? Yes, but the players need to take responsibility too.
Stupid plays usually come about from panic. Panic from the pressure, panic from playing from behind, etc.

Outside of the Finland game, the kids on the ice looked directionless and couldn't rally.

They never developed team confidence because they never really played well with leads. The literal men who brought them together didn't help the literal boys who were the ones playing the game.

A few players certainly underperformed or arguably should not have been invitees in the first place. That's not entirely indicative of the remaining what, 70-80% of the roster and it's not on the kids to want to be here but not deserve to be. Team Canada built the team they built.

Team Canada's coaches and decision makers built poorly, coached poorly, and managed poorly. That Cameron challenge was incredibly risky and unnecessary as it was obvious to anyone that they had their foot on the gas at the time and would score a legal goal soon (and did.) With the benefit of hindsight, the 2 minutes lost on the ensuing PK might well have cost the game as much as the dumb Gibson penalty.

“if you do something stupid again, I’ll send you home early” would be a message that should be sent to people who are taking stupid penalties. Instead we get “I got nothing” from Dave Cameron lol
Honest question, why was Cameron picked? Even if Hockey Canada wanted an experienced coach, there are betger ones they could have hired. Nothing since the 2011 WJC indicates Cameron should have been hired.

NONE of us want to see Dave Cameron back... EVER !!!!

I just don't know what was missing. Again, a VERY UN-likable team. Stupid plays killed us.

not enough 67s players

So the Canadian Hockey League allows imports on each team to develop within our system and then they score the winning goal on us.

I’d bet that the US doesn’t allow these imports into their leagues. It’s just a guess though

Way to develop other countries players Canada
Way to show your stripes.

The NHL is not the league it is without international players playing in the NA development systems. The sport is not the game it is without true competition. I would much rather Canada win (or even lose) a close, tightly-played game than to blow out the opposition tournament after tournament.

It's like if Ovechkin brags about scoring 200 goals against pee-wee players. What is there to even be entertained or impressed by?

And we LOST last year. People have been dumping on Wood's skating for YEARS. If he'd been sent and we lost, posters would be saying we shouldn't bring players who can't skate.

Easton Cowan did an interview on TSN. He is the LAST player I wanted to see.

Horrible way to lose. Can’t imagine.

Usually I hate having US play Canada for one of two reasons (sometimes both): 1) they have a couple high end offensive players who can take over at any moment …or 2) they have that ferocious forecheck…just wave after wave of pressure that eventually wears you down.

This years group seemed to have neither until the last 20 minutes of the Quarters.
Not taking anything away from Czechia or Latvia but for the teams considered true gold favourites I think if you're real fans of hockey as a sport first and foremost, you'd want to say you eliminated Canada along the way. We're all a little poorer for not seeing the best competition possible get to play out.

Just a different perspective. There are the kids that were 15 and 16 during the lockdowns. Perhaps that had an impact of their overall skill and ability result.

This only has legs if Canada managed these players different than other countries.
