Kingdom Come; Deliverance

I see people attributing the outrage to a vocal minority but I couldn’t disagree more, it’s actually the mainstream that really dislikes this stuff and we can see in the news that game devs are phasing this out, if you doubt that the viral clips of Veilguards dialogue didn’t hurt its sales I don’t know what to tell you. They fired every single writer on the game. I think it’s just a testament of how longs games take to develop that all this stuff that is almost a death sentence to a game if not a very strong turnoff is still appearing in games, because this was set in stone in 2020 and 2021.

KCD2 seems to have okay sales but it ain’t doing numbers like it should with absolutely nothing else releasing right now.
What kind of sales were expecting ? It sold a million in 24 hrs and has 200k+ players on steam.

Incredible game. I'm a huge fan of the first one and this is everything I wanted in a sequel so far.

Seems to be a massive success as well. Over 1 million copies sold on day 1, paid the development costs off already, and 250,000+ peak concurrent players on Steam (doesn't include players from other platforms) for an historical-fiction game from an indie developer is huge.

I feel so lost in this game right now lol. Bout 5 hours in…need to make sure I don’t give up on this game especially after dropping $100 on it 😭

Did you play the first one? KCD points you in the right direction a bit more early on (train with Bernard, patrol with nightingale, then hunt with Capon) to set yourself up decently. KCD2 is a bit harsher with dumping you into the world with no obvious path, though you want to do the early parts of the wedding quest at least to get yourself a chest and bed.

Naw man this is my first go round with any of the KCD games. Ngl yesterday I was getting super frustrated but I’m not giving up!!! Right now I’m trying to get into some wedding iirc. I was able to land the bed and chest through the blacksmith.

I have over 20 hours and I've barely touched the main quests. It's been a blast exploring and making my own story. There are so many things to do. Theyve improved on everything, but the one thing I enjoy the most is the lack of times quest to start. I can just free roam without the consequence of missing a main quest.

It's a hard game to get into. It took me a while to be decent at KCD1, but once it clicks it's so brilliant. If you're that lost though I would watch a guide and download some mods, like the unlimited saves mod.

AA title with a peak around 250K on launch on Steam and sales estimate between 800K and 1.4M having a slow start is amongst the most hilarious f***ing stupid shit I've heard.

Do not give up. I was in the same boat myself with how confusing and overwhelming some of the game systems and mechanics are. I have minimal experience with an RPG like this, played the original KCD but only like an hours worth, so not enough to carry over to help me here.

After putting a few hours into it, figuring out how each system works and getting saves down, I'm 100% addicted to the game. About 20 hours in and I feel like this is one of the best games I've ever played. Definitely an all timer for me.

It’s a good number in any other era, but in the current landscape where there’s literally nothing else it should be doing better, and the steam audience is way lower than it should be way larger.

The current landscape is dominated by free-to-play games like CS2, DOTA 2, Marvel Rivals and The Finals. Every game has to compete with them, no matter when it's released, and KCD II is currently the most played non-free/single-player game. Consider two other recent 1st-person single-player games: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which peaked at 12k players, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, which peaked as 121k players. KCD II's 256k peak is excellent compared to those, especially considering that it's a game about 15th-century Czech history. I think that it's doing a lot better than expected and expecting it to do any better wouldn't have been realistic.

Psh, why bring things like "sense" and "logic" into a feelings fight?

You didn't answer the question though. What were you expecting in terms of sales ? Steam has 250k concurrent players and about a million in sales just on that platform, for a hardcore medieval SIM game. Nobody feels this game is "woke" outside of terminally online weirdos. I'll also add that the negative reviews on steam are mostly well worded. Those that go in "that" direction are few and far in between on top of having less than 2hrs of game play, meaning they bought the game to review bomb it without playing it.

What's probably the best comparable for KCD2 is Bannerlord. It's not quite apples-to-apples : Bannerlord was the follow-up to the more successful (and, frankly, better) game, and it's not QUITE the same genre, but there is a lot similarities.

Bannerlord peaked at 250K. So... Similar to KCD2. But Bannerlord had been in developpement for MUCH longer (like, it was in developpement before KCD1 was even released) was also released (EA, but complete state) in, on top of my head, LATE FEBRUARY 2020, and that had its peak in APRIL 2020.

Basically, KCD2 got the same numbers as what's possibly the closest comparable. Despite being the sequel to the inferior game AND not having its numbers boosted by a global pandemic. And also despite being generally less accessible.

There is no debate when the developer already stated that the game was turning a profit after the first day of release.

Not every game has a bloated budget where it has to sell 10 million copies to turn a profit.
