Marchand seems like a word I can’t say on this board. Just my impression. Seems like he might upset the apple cart.

I feel like Nelson could improve us slightly somewhere. He was a 30-goal guy for three straight years coming into this one. A little elderly. Not gonna cry if we don’t, but I hope we do.

Maybe it's just me and I'm probably wrong, Nelson is 33 going on 55 years old in the looks dept, I hope he can still move them legs. It seems he's slightly behind in production but damn he's been consistent. I admittedly haven't paid a bit of attention to him.

@twabby what's the fancy stats tell us?
I believe he would have the 4th most 5v5 goals on the Caps and 3rd most 5v5 primary assists. He’s not a top line player but he’s a pretty good 2nd liner.

Will be interesting to see what their game plan is for the 3rd line. A Mangiapane-Nelson-Leonard/Frank 3rd line in the playoffs would be pretty solid, but if it’s Mangiapane-Eller-Nelson or Mangiapane-Eller and CMM or any other decent offensive player, they are going to be nuked offensively by Eller (Mangiapane’s offensive impacts aren’t great either). He’s a 4th line center and their worst forward at this point. That 3rd line can’t be a functional depth scoring line with him on it and that’s what they need it to be.

Nelson might be the only (plausible) target I'd be okay with the Caps giving up a 1st for. I don't know what else the Islanders would want, but I'd definitely be willing to add a 2nd (especially from this year's draft), even the Boston 2nd.

1st+2nd+C prospect? The Islanders might prefer a prospect instead of the 2nd, but I'd start with this.

ETA: I'm not sure if that would be enough. They could also add a conditional pick that gets added if the Caps make the SCF.

A bit of a down year overall, but very few forwards have had his offensive impact at ES over the past few years:

He's defensively flawed so I'm not sure he's a perfect fit. But he definitely moves the needle offensively. For a team that has struggled putting pucks in the net in the playoffs, he's a guy I'd consider worth the first round pick and maybe a bit more.

Makes sense, from an offensive standpoint but not sure how'd that work out on the lines if he's a defensive liability. Especially if we're bringing in Leonard and I admittedly have zero clue if he's going to be a defensive liability as well.

If Nelson is flawed defensively, do we really want him to center a third line and play him with Leonard? Not sure where else you're going to slot him though. I'm not opposed, just asking the questions that concern me.

we really need another scoring line, Dowd and Co. along with PLD’s line will carry the defensive burden. Nelson wins face-offs…we need that redundancy. Teams guy also.

@twabby mentioned it a moment ago and I also saw some fancy stats claiming he struggled defensively as well, I'll see if I can dig it back up.

though I really can't confirm because again I haven't really paid attention to Nelson lately. I'm definitely inquiring knowledge as well.

Struggled is probably too strong of a word, IMO. He's slightly below average.

I have no opinion on Brock Nelson. First, because I have not watched him closely enough recently and, second, because I am a notoriously bad judge of talent.

I also don't want to hold against him that he looks as old as me :DD

I do know that Lars Eller looks bad (while working extremely hard), and that third line looks lost. I would love to think that some combination of Lapierre/Miro/Leonard would make it look better, but that would be something you really couldn't trust in the playoffs.

Hopefully, MacLellen and Patrick can thread this needle.

I also am in agreement that Nelson is the perfect add. If they do get him I'd run the top two lines the same and have the bottom 6 as:

Mangiapane-Nelson-Raddysh
Duhaime-Dowd-Eller
Frank

Have you learned nothing these past 2 seasons, my good man?

If anyone can, it’s them!🙌🏼

That's a big yikes and why I'm skeptical even a productive, experienced center like Nelson would bring enough on his own to do enough damage. (Let alone someone like ROR who at this stage is even less able to shoulder that load.) Even with Leonard replacing Raddysh...I dunno. I'm just not a believer in Mangiapane. I don't think he's hard enough to play against and even struggles at the regular season pace. Hard to imagine he finds another level. They have some alternatives like Milano but their winger depth also isn't strong. It makes me question a bit whether being the top bidder on Nelson, who should have many suitors, is really the play to make. He can be the conduit to having a legit third line but they're definitely going to need to mix and match and not go uber conservative with a couple of low impact types.

Re: Rakell. True enough on the remaining term. Didn't realize it was that long. He can play both wings but at 32 in a couple of months? Pass.
