GDT: 2025 NHL Trade Deadline thread

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Would Boston trade Rat Face Marchand for their 2nd rounder back? That might be the only trade I see that makes us better.
I'd trade more than that 2nd for Marchand pretty easily. The only guy moved already that I think would've been a really good fit is Bjorkstrand. Guys that have been on the big boards at one point or another that I think would be great for us (price allowing):

Marchand
Nelson
ROR
Rantanen
McCann

Walman rumored to the Oilers for a 1st

For those keeping score that’s 2 likely top-50 picks that SJ has added for taking on Walman in exchange for future considerations

one of yzermans more baffling moves

Like that a lot for both teams. Absolutely hilarious that Yzerman made that move so that he could clear space to sign ... Vladimir Tarasenko

It's not just that. It's that plus the fact this team has no major holes or issues (upgrading 3C is a minor issue) and prices are utterly insane. For a meaningful upgrade to 3C (aka not just Laughton), the Caps might have to pay a 1st plus a bunch of other valuable assets.
I disagree that there are no issues. I think relying on Mangi/Frank/Raddysh in the top 9 (let alone top 6 if there’s injury) is just not good enough. I have no idea if Milano will be in any shape to contribute. Miro is prob still too green.

I can live with Eller (Laughton/Suter types are lateral moves or marginal upgrades). But I’d like to see someone that can drive play on that line. I guess that’s the good thing about Lenny - he’s consistently done that from the wing.

To clarify, when I wrote "this team has no major holes or issues" I meant no major holes or major issues. I consider those minor issues. Major issues are missing top 6 forwards/top 4 D/starting goalie.

Thinking there are no areas to improve this roster is delusional.

They are missing a top six forward. One injury and they are toast. There is no depth in terms of players who can move into the top six.

But when a team like Washington has aging headliners those depth pieces become a lot more important. They're more key than for an EDM, say. The Caps need high quality balance and depth to be successful. Mangiapane/Eller/Frank isn't that. Their production in the regular season even isn't there. Quite often they live and die by PLD's line and then whatever Ovechkin can muster 5v5. They need another facilitator that can move the needle. Perhaps that's Leonard but staking it on any rookie quickly figuring it out is a tough one.

Perhaps Milano could be Donato adjacent...but we have no idea where his game will be at. They've already waived Vrana for more flexibility. Hard to believe there won't be a move out there that puts them in better position that won't break the bank.

Their top 6 is legit. I wouldn’t say they’re missing a top 6 forward.

They’re missing a middle 6 forward for sure though. Like you said, they have nobody on the 3rd line that inspires confidence to move up if needed. Maybe Mangiapane in a similar sense to Connolly from 2016-2018 (not 2019 Connolly), but nobody close to Eller/Bura during the Cup run who could bump up to the 2nd line and not look out of place.

Palmieri makes a lot of sense. Could play anywhere in the top 9 on the right side and would play the bumper on PP 2.

You put it much better. They lack the bottom 6 player who could play up in the line up and fit in.

i remember thinking Palmieri might be our deadline addition years ago

although I haven't watched him much, i can't believe he is the player we want to add
I wouldn’t want him as a top 6 addition but he’d be pretty great on 3rd line and would easily be their best offensive and overall forward in the bottom 6.

Seems like Rakell is a bit underrated. No one has more even-strength points that's likely to move aside from Rantanen.

Maybe it's just me and I'm probably wrong, Nelson is 33 going on 55 years old in the looks dept, I hope he can still move them legs. It seems he's slightly behind in production but damn he's been consistent. I admittedly haven't paid a bit of attention to him.

@twabby what's the fancy stats tell us?

A bit of a down year overall, but very few forwards have had his offensive impact at ES over the past few years:

He's defensively flawed so I'm not sure he's a perfect fit. But he definitely moves the needle offensively. For a team that has struggled putting pucks in the net in the playoffs, he's a guy I'd consider worth the first round pick and maybe a bit more.
