I'm starting to lean towards Misa which is definitely a flip from where I'd have it before.

Martone is an offensive beast with a chip on his shoulder, reminds of a prime Perry or a bit of a Brady Tkachuk vibe - really good player.

But it's not hard to see franchise center potential in Misa. Sort of similar to Celebrini where there isn't a notable weakness or really anything they don't do pretty damn well. Really high floor but also huge upside, can be a gritty two way 2C like a Kadri, Bennett type guy even if the offense isn't truly high end, but he's scoring a goal per game in the OHL at 17.

Any concern that Martone might just be a man amongst boys in the OHL?

Not really, I think he'll be a star, he's big and talented enough to bully his way around the offensive zone against men in a due time. I'm just starting to think Misa as a jack of all trades center (even doing great in the face off circle, competes all over the ice) may trump him out along with Schaefer as having franchise potential. A Perry or Tkachuk would be great but you don't take one over a superstar center or Dman

Would this mean Misa is our 2C? I think Martone would be a better fit position wise.

For me when it comes to the top of the draft, you have to the player you see becoming the highest value star, then address organizational needs with other picks. Get the most elite player you can and fit the rest around it.

But I think every team dreams of having two #1 caliber centers to build around. Not saying they are on the same level, but Carlsson/Misa could be our Malkin/Crosby stylistically speaking.

Then is Z our 3C?

Martone seems like the better fit… but that’s based on the players we have panning out, which isn’t a guarantee.

Prob still a coin flip for me

Fit factors in if it's equal or too close to call, but this org can't afford to pass on the more elite talent due to their fit with players who haven't proven to be elite. If tiers start to emerge in that top group as the year goes on, we want to get into the highest tier possible.

The other thing to consider when comparing them, is that Martone is a late bday guy and actually the same age as Sennecke, whereas Misa is a birth year younger than those two.

I want to know why scouts were so low on him at the start of the season. Were there issues he fixed or did he just take a huge step forward?

Brock Otten addressed that in his recent initial ranking, where he had Misa first ahead of Schaefer and Martone.

I'm liking all of the options to increase our forward scoring, but reading up on Schaefer by Brock has me wanting Schaefer. Here's what Brock summed up on Schaefer, "He has the chance to be a real defensive cornerstone and a potential Norris candidate. If the team picking first has a real need for a cornerstone on the back-end, Schaefer is going to be difficult to pass up."

Anaheim has a lot of OFD's on the squad and are lacking in potential NHL top-4 defensive d-men. The closest we have to that kind of d-man now are LaCombe and Minty, with LaCombe ahead of Minty defensively. Both are fringe middle pairing D at the moment. It does suck that Schaefer is an LD, but that could also mean we have more trade capital in the near future if Schaefer progresses faster than expected. Or we can convert some LDs to RD in LaCombe, Zell, or Hinds. All three have played exclusively RD with their junior or NCAA teams before going pro.

Top-10 drafted forwards in the Anaheim system since both rebuilds
  • 2019, 9th OA, C Zegras
  • 2021, 3rd OA, C McTavish
  • 2022, 5th OA, LW Cutter
  • 2023, 2nd OA, C Carlsson
  • 2024, 3rd OA, RW Sennecke

Top-10 drafted d-men in the Anaheim system since both rebuilds
  • 2022, 10th OA, LD Mintyukov
If the opportunity presents itself that Schaefer is available to us, then I hope we can draft him. We are relying late first round or later draft picks to populate our blueline. Not many teams are willing to trade young, top-4 defensive d-men. Anaheim would have to draft one and the likelihood of grabbing one of those is in the top-3.

Of course, we still have a lot of season left to see if Schaefer can continue to build up his resume to be the BPA.

Schaefer looks like a real gem, I see some of the same qualities as Sanderson but flashing more high end offense. Can't be disappointed if we land a D prospect of that caliber. The WJC could really be a coming out party for him

I feel like Shaefer is going to end up going 1st overall…. Man imagine a team like the sharks get him.

Celebrini, smith, musty, eklund up from
Dickinson shaefer on back end with askarov in net
