2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

Who should we pick 3rd overall (assuming Schaefer and Misa are gone)?

it quite genius actually.. Blackhawks and Sharks get the guys they want and now the Blackhawks have not technically jumped up in the lottery leaving them still eligible for the 26 draft jump up. Isles playing with house money

Genius for the Isles, braindead for the the Hawks and Sharks. The Hawks and Sharks can get the guys they want without giving them anything lol.

If I'm the Sharks and the Isles say make the proposed deal or we're taking Shaefer, it's a slam dunk. Sharks (and thr Hawks) have had a ridiculous amount of draft capital so it's a really small price to pay to get the guy they need. The Isles just have to be smart enough to stick to their guns and if Grier/KD say no, they take Shaefer and everything goes as expected.

bingo! This is exactly the take. Hence why Isles are playing with house money. They were not expecting to be top 5 let alone #1. This draft would allow them to still get their guy "Hagens" while also gaining more capital either with prospects or picks.. meanwhile Blackhawks get top forward and Sharks get the top Defenseman. If Hagens was say 6'1 I would be all over the Blackhawks taking him at #3..problem is he is not

Legit question why is Caleb Desnoyers getting so much hype lately over Jake O'Brien? Like I legit cant figure it out. O'Brien plays in a better more competitive league the OHL vs Desnoyers in QMJHL. They are both centers and O'Brien is 6'2 170 vs Desnoyers at 6'2 172. O'Brien had 98 points in 66 vs Desnoyers who had 84 pts in 56 games. If Blackhawks stay at #3 I want O'Brien

It might be however there are alot of options for the hawks at 3 so time will tell. I do think how Desnoyers plays against the WHL and OHL champs will be a good measuring stick for all teams scouts.

O'Brien feasted on a great powerplay but produced far fewer primary points and even strength points compared to Desnoyers. Their scoring rate being about the same (1.5 ppg for CD vs 1.48 for O'Brien) doesn't actually speak all that favorably for O'Brien. He plays an incredibly junior game that he will more or less need to reinvent to succeed as a pro while Desnoyers plays a simpler but skilled and intelligent game that should translate well to the pros. The OHL is a better league but it is also a higher scoring environment than the Q. Desnoyers was 2nd in his entire league in points per game; O'Brien was 3rd on his own team.

That's all without considering the playoffs, where O'Brien's production dropped considerably and Desnoyers' has increased considerably and led his entire league by more than .5 points per game.

I can see an argument for O'Brien having a higher ceiling based purely on the tools but I don't see the difference as that large and Desnoyers has a lot fewer holes in his game

I appreciate the feedback! I legit havent watched them play other than highlights. I feel like O'Brien has way more of playmaker to his game while Desnoyers looks more like a natural scorer.I do like the better league competition of OHL but its not the end all. One plus for O'Brien is playing already with Vanacker and Lardis
 
Desnoyers is showing more skill than I gave him credit for. He has some real slick hands and vision. Shows some real savvy at creating lanes and exploiting them, albeit against much less talented competition. Hard to gauge, because his skating can look plus at times, but the guys in the Q also look so much less physically talented as a whole than the rest of the CHL.

I think there is a little too much being made out of Desnoyers playing in the Q. There are examples of great prospects coming out of lesser leagues.

Case in point, Cale Makar was drafted out of the AJHL

Makar was always committed to college.

We haven't heard yet if Des will take that route.

Definitely a ceiling there. If he can bring out that skill more consistently and improves on his skating, that's a really good player.
