2025 NHL DRAFT Prospects Undrafted Free Agents

Calling it now, Frondell just might rise to #1 in the draft. He has had a monstrous development after most draft rankings placed him #5-8. The last few weeks he has 16 points over 8 games in pro hockey while averaging 12 minutes per game. He's playing together with Victor Eklund and their line is absolutely tearing it up while playing in a professional league not far from AHL-standard.

The only U18 players who can compare through Hockeyallsvenskan history are David Pastrnak and William Nylander, but that's seen over the full season. What Frondell has displayed the last few weeks where his ice time grew completely lacks comparables. It's a small sample size, but it will be exciting to follow for sure.

I don't see him overtaking Misa or Hagens, or Schaefer for that matter. I could see 4th though, if teams are put off by Martone's skating and McQueen's injuries

Can we talk about late (3rd or later) round goalies. its been a few years since we drafted one (2021 Boyko).

or even available undrafted....

With the NCAA season moving into conference playoffs next weekend and free agency beginning it's time to consider who might the Rangers try to sign. The Rangers haven't signed a top free agent since 2022 when they were able to get Bobby Trivigno and Brandon Scanlin. But with some weakness in the prospect system the Rangers might be looking to fill some of those gaps.

In his February 28 32 Thoughts, Elliotte Friedman noted that the Rangers were one of three teams in on Dartmouth center, Luke Haymes. Haymes is a 6'1'' 191 lbs. center who's scored at a point a game for the last two years. Other bigger centers who could become available are Karsten Dorwart of Michigan State (#1 on Corey Pronman's recent free agent list), whose scoring at close to a point a game for three years, and Jack Stockfish of Holy Cross (#5 on Corey Pronman's recent free agent list) who Pronman says is a two way player.

Other player to keep an eye on is Liam McLinskey, big time scorer at Holy Cross for the last two years. He is tall but thin. Pronman says he is a "big winger with good puck skills and creativity. While the Rangers might not be looking for forwards, McLinskey is from Pearl Harbor, NY, is a cousin of rangers draft pick Drew Fortescue and the families are close.

I'd be watching big centers and big puck moving defensemen as potential Rangers targets.

30. In a recent pod, we mentioned Ottawa-born Luke Haymes, an NCAA free agent at Dartmouth. The Rangers, Tampa Bay and Toronto are among the teams pursuing him.

can he skate?

The NCAA free agent analyses should be coming in the next week. On EP there is an analysis saying that skating is his biggest weakness but has improved significantly over the last year and he was call one of the few free agents with a "clear pathway to the NHL." We're talking about a bottom six center. Very unusual to get front line NHL players in these free agents. As an example a few years ago Connor Mackey was one of the top free agents and he's struggled to stay in the NHL.

Do the Rangers sign Gleb Veremyev, Laba's teammate?? His favorite team growing up is New York Rangers. I am not sure that Laba and Veremyev are on the same line but at 6'4 215 another big guy that can play.

The times I looked at Colorado College lines they were not on the same line this year. Also Laba missed several games. But I did not look at every game.

Every year I track the college free agents. The Rangers were very active in the later part of the 2010s but I believe have not signed a college free agent to an NHL contract since Bobby Trivigno and Brandin Scanlin in 2022. Looking at the Rangers system you would think the team would be mostly interested in centers and defensemen and less so for wingers and goalies. The team's interest in Haymes fits that analysis.

Veremyev is on everyone's free agent list but not at the top of the lists. For example, EP rated him the 21st best free agent prospect. He is a winger and had a down year this year. He has one more year of eligibility and his options are to stay at Colorado or enter the transfer portal in addition to signing an NHL or AHL contract.

Trivigno signed with his favorite team so we know that happens. But players with options often look to see what's their best chance of moving up in the system. Right now the Rangers's system is loaded with young wingers (Cuylle, Perrault, Lafreniere, Othmann, Berard, Rempe, Edstrom, Kaliyev, Chmelar, Sykora, Brisson, Vaisenen, Lamp, Aspinall) I'm not sure the team is necessarily looking for a winger and if so I'm not sure a winger looks at the team and sees much of an opportunity.

We should know what Laba and Veremyev decide in the next few days.

While most of the top players are still in the running for the NCAA playoffs a few of the prospects have had their seasons end. A few players to look out for are left defensemen John Prokop of Union and Trey Taylor of Clarkson and center Brett Chorske (son of Tom).

Don't really see Veremyev as a player. Even if he is, we've got half a dozen guys already competing for bottom 6 winger roles.

At best really I can see the Rangers maybe signing 2/3 Undrafted free agents. Two guys who aren't so big that might be interesting are TJ Hughes who plays center for Michigan U. and the third Hutson brother Quinn a right wing for Boston U. Both are great college players and catalysts for their teams. I wouldn't necessarily rule out picking up a goalie or a defenseman either. Rangers signed Pionk out of Minnesota Duluth some years ago and that was an astute pickup. The Rangers were so thin at the time on the blue line that they gave Neal a bit more than he could handle well. He's properly slotted as a solid and stable 2nd pairing defensemen in Winnipeg where from season to season he puts up 35/40 points--second power play unit....some penalty killing. If the Rangers could pick up a puck moving defenseman like him that would be great.

Any thoughts on Liam McLinskey from Holy Cross? Hobey Baker finalist. From Pearl River and Fortescue's cousin.
Yes, I think I highlighted him in an earlier post. He's not only Fortescue's cousins but the families are very close. He's on everyone's top free agent list even though he plays for Holy Cross in a weak conference. McLinskey was just nominated as a finalist for the Hobey Baker award.

I'm just not sure that someone who plays wing looks at the Rangers' young forwards and sees a great path to playing in the NHL (Cuylle, Perrault, Lafreniere, Othmann, Berard, Rempe, Edstrom, Kaliyev, Chmelar, Sykora, Brisson, Vaisenen, Lamb, Aspinall).

But you never know what the prime motivating factor is for a player in choosing a team and signing with the Rangers, playing in Hartford where his family could see him and playing with his cousin with whom he is close could make a difference if the Rangers are interested.

One of McLinskey's teammates at HC, Jack Stockfish, is a big center who has some offensive ability who might be of interest. Elite Prospects and Corey Pronman had him rated slightly higher than McLinskey. It's already been reported by Elliotte Friedman that the Rangers are one of the teams interested in Dartmouth center, Luke Haymes, so it seems that the Rangers are looking for a big center with some skill and Stockfish could be an alternative if the Rangers miss out on Haymes.

Almost all of the top free agents found on a variety of lists are still playing in the NCAA tournament and are not eligible to sign. We will have a few more teams eliminated this weekend and will see more signings next week. The other signing is center Brett Chorske of Colgate who signed an AHL contract with Charlotte. The only top free agent who can sign is Gleb Veremyev of Colorado and I have posted some insight into him above.

If you were him and saw what a cesspool the Islanders are you would think you would have a better opportunity to get to the NHL than with the Rangers.

They have a few young forwards that could be really good but really only one on their NHL roster Simon Holmstrom. Cole Eiserman had a big freshman year with Boston U. Danny Nelson was very good at the WJC's. Calum Ritchie captained Canada at the WJC's and should be a really good player. After that it's pretty much pot luck---maybe a couple guys that could be bottom 6'ers which is pretty much Vermeyev's upside.
