Pronman Changing his tune on 1OA.

Corey Pronman

NHL Draft 2025 top prospects: Porter Martone ranks No. 1, James Hagens drops to No. 2

Boston College center James Hagens and Brampton Steelheads winger Porter Martone are neck and neck for me in the first-overall pick conversation, as they were entering the season.

Hagens is a smaller but dynamic play-driving center, and Martone is a highly skilled big winger with a lot of athleticism. It’s not completely analogous, but their skill sets and positions remind me of how Logan Cooley was contrasted to Juraj Slafkovský ahead of the 2022 NHL Draft. I leaned Hagens entering the year; today I lean Martone, and my lean could change in my next update. I have Erie defenseman Matthew Schaefer at No. 3 on my list, but he’s in the conversation to go No. 1 or 2 in part due to the fact that there is a giant chasm between him and the next-best defense prospect in this class.

This team should be drafting only centers and LHD the next two years.

No doubt they need Centers. Personally i would rather Hagens. He literally is from my neighborhood. Would be amazing to see a Hauppauge kid go 1OA.

Some of the draft specialists are changing their tune on 1OA. Not a 1 man show anymore. Turning into a 3 horse race.

Agreed. Martone's numbers as a D-1 are getting harder and harder to ignore. Don't think 1st overall good but top 3 for sure. I still expect the top 3 to go Hagens, Schaefer, and Martone barring a huge or disappointing WJC from one or two of them.

A lot will change but I get a kick out of the idea that in a season where the Rangers might be bad and have a high pick, the potential number 1 prospect is a big winger.

Like god, can’t one of these times be a sure fire 1C lmao

Whenever the Rangers draft centers regardless of two way players, top end talent or bottom line forwards like MCConnell-Barker, Rempe, Korczak, this team moves them to wing. Cant wait for them to do this with Laba. That is. Rangers scouting issue. Shocked they never moved Chytil to winger full time.

pronman is a dolt

Schaefer.

Misa is nasty and will go way later than he should though.
Pronman is going to piss me off (as usual), but this is the answer. Nobody other than Hagens or Schaefer should be 1OA.

Now, this fanbase would absolutely hate both, but they’re exactly what we need

Wanted to watch a little Tomáš Poběžal today but it seems like he's not playing. Maybe something to do with the WJC coming? I don't know. He's on the same team we plucked Adam Sýkora from, HK Nitra. So we've had eyes there before, could be on their radar. Just a quick little barebones numbers comparison...

Sýkora draft year: 46 games, 10G, 7A : 17 points
Filip Mešár draft year: 37 games, 8G, 8A : 16 points
Poběžal is sitting at 26 games, 12G, 5A : 17 points

The WJC could propel his name up the rankings. Tricky to make a complete comparison because on one hand Poběžal is about as old a birthday as you can get for the draft whereas Sýkora was about as young as you could be. So almost an entire year of development separating the two. Adam coming in was profiled as the quick little buzzsaw type you could throw in your bottom 6. Maybe Poběžal will be profiled as having more upside, I don't really know.

I miss the days of good Slovaks. You'd have to go back many years now. Hossa, Gáborík, Chára... we need those guys again. Luckily there seems to be a little revival going on. They've had some good drafts the last few years. Slafkovský, Dvorský, Nemec..

That isn't a Rangers thing. Every team does it.

A lot of the best players play center at lower levels but aren't good fits for the position at higher levels.

Derek Stepan never played wing when he was a rookie with the Rangers

I love the fact that we suck again in yet another mid draft year. Whoever goes 1OA this year is no Bedard or Celebrini, and neither of those guys is McDavid or Matthews.
I'm not sure the top end talent is too much of an issue this year. I think the main reason it's being considered a weaker year is because there's a number of regions that are pretty shitty. So it's really more the depth it seems. Because if you look at the top guys from this year and compare it to some of the recent drafts, these guys stand out. Maybe there's no McDavid but you compare Hagens, Misa or Martone with guys like Hischier, Beniers, Wright, Slafkovský, Svechnikov, Cooley... those drafts I would say had weak top end talent. This one, not as much

I figure we’ll be picking somewhere bt 7-10, so a few possible targets are:

Caleb Desnoyers
Carter Bear
Justin Carbonneau
Viktor Eklund
Ivan Ryabkin

Pretty sure the following will all be gone in some order
Matthew Schaefer
James Hagens
Porter Martone
Michael Misa
Roger McQueen
Anton Frondell

Laba will be a center. They can bring him along slowly.
