That is extremely high risk/high reward.......would take some big kahoonas but I definitely don't hate it. I haven't done enough research yet to be confident in an endorsement but at surface level it is an admirable swing for the fences move. I could conversely see them going the opposite route with two of Martin/Hensler/Cootes/Zonnon as well in a safe character/depth mode.

My guess is they take a swing with one of the 1st rounders and go safe with the other.

I am on the O'Brien train right now with our first pick.
Is it possible that McQueen or Frondell slip out of the top 10 because of their injuries and lack of exposure this year?

Also, would trading both first round picks be able to get Montreal to move up? Is it reasonable to think that 14th + 16th could get into Desnoyers range?

I would only consider moving up if it was to snag one of the top 4 (possibly) Desnoyers
With this draft -- where it is really unclear where some talents will shake out from, I think that we might see draft day trades out on the (virtual) draft floor like we did during Hughes first draft.

Brady Vail up better DY numbers than Chipchura, he was never going to be much anyway (but he'll always have the Ovi highlight).

Bear is a dog, I'm sure he'll be back better than ever.

Yeah Chipchura never had offense, but the injury hurt his already mediocre skating ability.

I'm perfectly fine trading both 1sts this year if we can get some big roster improvements.

I don't see Frondell slipping out in any scenario but McQueen certainly could if he really struggles over the final stretch and/or the back issues reoccur.

There is such a distinct drop off from Desnoyers' likely draft position to the picks in the mid teens that I do not think it is a scenario that has much of a chance to develop. Hughes would have to add to the offer to even have a chance of completing it. The only way that the Habs move up into the top 6 is via a draft lottery win or a late season collapse.

But bear is ten times the player chipchura was.
Chipchura was a potential top 5-10 pick before his draft year. I don't think that's remotely true. His draft season lagged a little because he played on a shit team. He was supposed to be the best center available after Malkin. None of his team mates, even goalies, made a full-time NHL roster. Not even one.

Bear is floating in the 15-18 range even before this news; though some were extremely bullish on him. There's not really a big difference in pre-draft hype.

Either you guys weren't following prospects back then or you're trying to compare 2024 numbers to 2004 numbers like there's any merit to it. Like the NHL, CHL scoring is massively up in the past few years. Chipchura was expected to become essentially what Patrice Bergeron became.

I wish Carter Bear a speedy recovery. A lot has changed since Chipchura had his achilles injury as far as surgical advancements. I'm sure our scouts/doctors will monitor his recovery and hopefully make an informed decision. He'd make a great addition to the prospect pool if they opted to take him.

Chipchura was not a good skater prior to the injury and was never projected to be a high end offensive player. He was a two way, heart and soul leader before the injury and the mythology of him having this enormous offensive potential is irritating to have to tolerate.

I liked Chipchura as a prospect but never believed that he was going to be an offensive force.

Is this a bad year for Euro's?

There seems to be less than usual... or at least NA media is slower than usual to notice them. I know there are usually a few that start to pop after the U-18's

I'm liking the top 15-20... I imagine it will fill in nicely. We should be able to add some very nice prospects with our 1st 4 picks.

Its a down year for Finland and the USA. Strong year for Canada and Sweden.

There are a lot of Swedes (or at least prospects playing in Sweden) in rounds 2-5 that are probably flying under the radar.

Awesome... thanks!

Looking forward to the U-18's... it's always a fun way to get to know a bunch of guys...

curious about the US... seems like a bunch of guys are underachieving...

Chipchura was still the fourth c off the board. Offensively bergy wasn't all that either, without the late career NHL numbers jumping insanely and playing with pasta, you're talking 50-60 points a year with great defense. It was a weak year for centers overall.

Even if Bear rehabs to 100% from this injury, it will surely slow down his development timeline. The Habs hole at 2C is so pressing that if they were to draft a center based on need, it would be one that's pretty close to playing in the show.
